Red Mahogany?

hard to tell with the finish on it and the part is not finished is rough and not flat so again tough to tell.

The larger kind of spots or grain in the first pic make me believe that it is not a mahogany at all or even a related species to mahogany. Check out the link below for great information about mahogany. The wood database is also a great place to go and search for identity of spieces.

a good end grain pic would help

love that keyboard Kevin!

got a picture of the end grain with no finish? if you slice a thin piece off the end, 1/4" ish, hold it up to a light and can see through it, it is probably red oak.either way, a great score!

adding to waynes link, heres a list of the different mahoganies and characteristics:

For sure it is not red oak.  I do believe it might be a form of mahogany.  I just scored a bunch of mahogany from a friend who's company is remodel a large lawyers office. I got 21 linear feet of 1 x 6 1/2" base board and 23 linear feet of 1 x 5 1/2" base board.  Here is a picture.

mine is very red

Many species of Mahogany out there with Honduras Mahogany very expensive and hard to find. It is a soft wood, light in weight and weather resistant. Nice material to work with because of ease to cut and no harsh grains.

I believe this is soft, very very red wood.

I can tell you for sure it is not bloodwood or redheart. They are the redest woods on the market but hard and heavy woods. It is a mahagony, if real red it could be Honduras mahogany.

its not honduran mahogany for sure. I have some of that stuff and its completely different and Kevin your right it is pretty soft. Here is a pic of honduran mahogany...

Wayne nice cutting but I will have to differ with you 100% Look up any data base and it will state that Honduras Mahagony will be a light reddish brown to a darker reddish brown. I can pull some boards out and take some photos if you would like and compare to a few other mahagonys I have. . I work with it alot. Put a film finish on it and it will darken and over time it will really deepen to a dark reddish color especially if left in sunlight. People will spend big money on furniture made from it. http://www.olivercustomfurniture.com/photos/wood03.jpg many people pass off Sapele which is in the mahagony family as Hondurous mahagony http://www.wood-database.com/wp-content/uploads/sapele.jpg
