OPINIONS PLEASE / what saw

The one difference that stands out to me, is the rather large horizontal structure that is on the left side of the Delta and next to the back side of the table. It would seem to me to be a little restrictive to me. I have only seen photos of the saw so I am not sure about it. Other than that, I guess it must be a toss up, from what I read on other people's posts

Tuner, if you have the funds, buy the Dewalt. These two saws are similar, they are not the same as each other. The Delta saw is built with lower quality parts, it was meant to be a mid-range priced saw. It was mainly built to fill in the gap, between the lower quality saws and the Dewalt. If you buy the Delta saw, you are buying a lower quality saw. You be the judge, is better quality worth an extra $80.00?

With Dewalt, you know you will always be able to get parts, and that the company is on sound financial grounds.  When B&D sold off the Delta brand to TOTY (Chang Type Industries), then parts became almost impossible to get, I think Delta lost a lot of trust, at least they did with me.  Are you sure parts have been consistently available with Delta?  If there is good evidence that "Delta is Back", then maybe you risk it.

Things at Delta may be better now as you say, I'm a little skeptical.  I hope you are right because we need more competitive saws in the market.  I do know that their previous saw was parts compatible with the 788, so for that saw, I wouldn't have worried.  But now that Delta tweaked the design, no one seems to know just how many parts the two saws share between them.  I like the fact that Delta added a feature that keeps the arm in the up position to aid in blade changes, but all in all, I'm still leary of Delta.

If I had to pick one "gun to my head" I would pick the 788. Since I don't have to I would save my money and get a good one. A 788 is going to cost about $500 plus tax and it may spend half it's life in the shop unless you work on it your self. Can you tell yet I have had some bad luck with the 788?   :)  If you take your time you might pick up a good saw on Craig's List but we Americans don't like waiting. Do we?

I have several Delta brand woodworking tools but when they basically turned my Delta P20 scroll saw into a boat anchor I said enough.   Any company that doesn't support their products loses my trust.   The days of counting on a company to stand behind their products or brands long term are a thing of the past but between these two saws I would defiantly go with the Dewalt.

I was just fooling around looking at saws on craigslist and stumbled across a dewalt 788 for $135.  Called the guy and went over and bought it no questions asked.  it is like brand new, still has the sealant coating stuff on the table and the original blade in it.

Just keep your eyes peeled and you can find something of great quality like this.  I have had mine for years with zero troubles.  i also dont shake it to death. I usually cut only 1/8" bb and use 2/0 blades on the slowest speed.

had an old delta shopmaster that i used for years and it was fine but it was a bit shakier even at slow speeds.  Once you start getting into the finer details you will need the better saw because they are built better.

Would over a hegner but just out of my price range so will keep looking on craigslist for that once in a lifetime deal.
