I have a delta SS250 scroll saw that has been in the box for more than 2 years. I bought it at the local hardware store on sale and never used it. Now that I am retired I thought I might start cutting out some of the scroll saw patterns I have collected. I plug the saw up and try to adjust the speed control and It keeps the same speed all of the time. Delta will not replace the speed control. Has anyone had the same problem with a Delta SS250 and what should I try next. A new speed control cost more than what the scroll saw cost to start with.  Joe

The first thing that comes to mind is a router speed control. I think Harbor Freight has them cheap so it would be worth a try. Is it stuck in the full speed position? If you have a good Radio/ TV guy close he might be able to replace the rheostat for you.

DO NOT use a router speed control on a scroll saw. You will burn up the motor!

If the speed control is of the old style rheostat type, tv repair places used to have same problem with the old style tv tuners and had a spray can called tuner cleaner.  I doubt if that is still around but you might find a can of what they call all electrical cleaner which I have used before and it works.  You used to just spray this in though openings in the rheostat and then turn it back and forth and it would clean the contacts inside and then all was good.  Obviously do this with it unplugged from power supply.
