I know there was some kind of tutorial using Inkscape and creating wordart for compound cutting. I want to do a simple little 2 sided sign for my wife and I can't figure out how to do it in Inkscape. Can anybody point me in the direction of that tutorial? I'd sure be most appreciative. Thanks.

Ray,

Is this the sort of thing you were looking for  ??

What I'm looking for more than anything is a tutorial using Inkscape to draw a pattern just like your picture. I emailed Steve Good and told him what I needed doing and he did it and sent me the pattern but I still want to know how to do it in Inkscape. I'm having a tough time learning that program for some reason. I'd swear that there is a wordart tutorial somewhere here on SSV. Maybe I'm dreaming. At my age, anything is possible. I've also looked at a ton of youtube videos so it could have been there. Also, in the same thread, somebody included a picture of my "octoolguy" and my name so that I could cut it out. It's on my computer somewhere.

Found it under the pattern central tab, pattern making.  The "sticky" or pinned topic has a tutorial there.  I hope that is what  you are looking for.

Ray I’ve designed a few compound patterns with Inkscape and it’s fairly easy. I’m not sure if there is a tutorial on how to do it. I’m not good at explaining things but as long as you know the wood size eg. 1.5” x 1.5” then you stack the letters on top of each other making sure they are no wider then 1.5” wide. The height of the letters can be your choice. Make two bases on the bottom 1.5” across for each. Set a line down the middle of the bases and line the two sides up from there. If you want to do a compound like in Don Watson’s picture do the same thing but add the framed boarder around the edges.

Hope this helps

Thanks everybody. I know I'm slow but I was trying to create pattern using a piece of 1.5 x 1.5 x 12 inch for a wordart 3D compound cutting. I drew the "box" but for the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to draw a center line from one end to the other. I guess I need to watch all the videos again. I did finally get Steve Good to create my pattern but that doesn't solve my ineptitude.

Ray,

I just had a thought on this and tired it and it works.  (Scary thought but it worked)

With your box drawn, select text tool and then select a font.  I went to Times New Roman.  Using shift/underline keys on keyboard draw a underline.  Change length of underline to 12 inches. Now, select the box, shift key and select the line.  With two selections showing, open align tool - make sure setting is to selection- and align left to right then align up and down.  This should center the underline center in the the box.  Then select both items and join together.

Hope this is understandable.

By the way, I remember the posting that showed your name and octoolguy but do not remember which posting it was.

I am messing with it right now. I created a rectangular box and inserted a center line. I put my text in the top and bottom half of the box. I get messed up when I try to make the box the size I want it by using the highth/width measurment boxes. All of a sudden everything got smaller. How do you make the screen reflect the size of what you want to create in the correct measurements? I'll see if I can add a couple of pics of what I'm trying to do.

Ray,

I cannot visualize cutting with both upper and lower text so using all upper case, I will show the steps I took to make a pattern for this. Maybe this will help answer your questions.

To have a finished block of 1x5 by 12, I would select a 1/4 inch border around the text. This would make the text 1” tall and 11.5 wide.

1) Do RAY LOVES BARB line with stroke: red fill: white.  With height/width ratio lock open set height at 1” and set width to 11.5.

Make box 1” x 11.5 wide with stroke red and fill red.

Bring RAY line into the red box – use Object raise/lower for text to show.  Then align text into box.  This should give you a red box with white letters centered in the red box.  Group box and letters.

Do the same with BARB LOVES RAY line.

2) Now make two boxes 1.5 x 12.

Bring the Ray line to one box (may need to use Object raise/lower to get box to show) and align it up/down and left/right.  This should give a large box with the red box with white letters centered in it. Group boxes.

Do the same steps for the Barb line.

3) Position the RAY LOVES box above the BARB LOVES box to where bottom of RAY box almost touches the top of the BARB box.     Now align boxes left and right.    With arrow up key, bring the BARB box up to where the top line covers the bottom line of the RAY box.

4) When satisfied with the boxes being brought together, group them together.

This should give a finished pattern with the red portions to be cut out.

I tried to attach some pictures but am having difficulty loading them.

Lot of ways to skin this cat, this is how I do it

insure the rulers are set to inches
use the square tool and drag out a rectangle
click the x lower left  in the object fill color line to make it transparent
size the box

hit ctrl-D
menu path>dynamic offset
grab the circle top left corner and drag down and right, use the rulers to get it sized correctly
click the pointer tool
select both boxes, use menu object>group

Hit ctrl-D
drag the box down and match up the center lines, zoom in to get it exact

use the pointer, draw a box around it all and use menu object>group

save the file, with a name like compound-name-template, then you can use it over and over

Do the lettering

Thanks for your patient help Larry. I'm sitting here reading it over and over. At some point, it will sink in but right now, I'm like a bad sponge. Nothing is penetrating. I'm going to give it a try but it sure would be neat to see it done in a video or pics. I'm just not getting it.

Jim, I hate to admit how slow I am but I am trying to do as you instruct. But I'm just not getting it. First, how do you make the rulers inches? I am just not sure of what you speak. Then, I create a rectangle but I can't find where to make it transparent. I'm sorry but I guess I will have to go back and watch all the videos again.

Yes, that is what I was originally looking for but now I guess what I am trying to do is learn how to make the pattern like that one. My problem is just not being able to follow the instructions that folks are giving me to do this in Inkscape. I know that if I just once had someone sitting next to me and showing me how to do it, I'd never forget it. I just haven't found the right video yet.

Thanks for your help.

Ray,

I will make up a step-by-step instruction set when I get back from the Doc's.

I had help from Fab4 and managed to get a working project.

Hi Don:
Hopefully, nothing serious at the Doc's
