I feel your pain.  I do not store my patterns on my computer, I use a dedicated flash drive and work on them directly from the flash drive.  That way, if anything happens to the hard drive (such as an update), I will not lose my patterns.  I have hardly anything I want to keep stored on the  computer.  I don't use the "cloud", but that would be another way to keep them stored.

By dumb luck, I had printed what I had completed to show to the Sweet Wife.  We found that.  Something I never had to try was when you import into inkscape, will an imported picture print.  IT DOES.  Now I can import what I had completed & continue from where I left off.

Another tip is to follow the example set by the Good Lord.....save, and save often.  :)
