They will be part of the fretwork,

I was asked to keep it about 10 mm thick,so cutting it from 3mm ply with a backer

Well here is the finished piece,

I originally used a piece of pine as a backer but this warped the piece,so I planned the pine as thin as I dared and glued it to a piece of mdf
