Back in the day, I was in the National Guard. We were getting ready to move out to a training area. Someone

had battle locked one of the APC’s from the outside. At the time it was thought that the only way to get into

the vehicle was to remove the main hatch hinge, held in place by springs. The top mechanic (e-8 who’d

been dealing with this kinda stuff for a long time by now) said he’d had to do this twice before and it was a

five hour job, minimum. We needed to move out in 30 minutes.

I looked at the problem and told them I could do it in 15 minutes. Maintenance chief said no way, I did it in 10

minutes and the unit made the departure time. The look of horror on that E-8’s face though (and he

remembered two years later when it happened again, he didn’t have to come find me, they just did it)

How you say? I removed an antenna mount that gave me just enough room to stick my arm into the hull and

using a socket extension bar was able to pop the catch for the main hatch. Reinstalled the mount while the

crew loaded their gear.

This is why I ask oddball questions, maybe someone has looked at this in a different way. I may be good, but

I know I’m not perfect and that I can get tunnel vision about a technique. So I ask, and I ask on public forums

so others can see alternate solutions.
