  1. Does top feeding work differently at 45 deg with tilting table?
  2. I skip the patterns.
  3. might consider easter concepts. and 4 leaf clover for St. Patricks day. also an object that could still look good with poor skills. A wavy sided square , like an old scroll that is unrolled, a flying flag. Carots. Me. Mark Eason
  4. Welcome to the village. I joined last year, and I have learned so much in the village. Ask questions and we will give are opinions and tips. Also we like pictures. Me. Mark Eason
  5. Ok, by a request from dakota52 here is a selfie. I don't like selfies. I was going to wait until I grow my mustache but oh well. Also here is a short video that rotates the hat top bottom and around.
  6. So now you saw the good side. Here is my ooops. When drilling I had drill bit bend or drift. In 3/4" maple at 9 degrees. My hat crown thickness is only 0.125" so not much room to sand down to blend it in. Also there is a wood dark grain that kind looks like stitching. It just happened to be where my drill holes are. There is wood filler that is staimable and was recommended by Dave Monk. But Timbermate is on back order. So for this hat I decided to leave it as is.
  7. Well I did order hard maple?
  8. I was inspired to make this project by seeing a cowboy hat made by a lathe. This is a wearable cowboy hat. I thought that this was a bit of a challenge so I expected some re-dos. I did have some oopses but was able to recover from them. Since I have done bowls before, I thought just maybe I could do it. A hat's crown is the same basic shape. Just add a thin top, and a big thin wide brim. And "how to bend" wood. Oh crap ! I had to learn that and hope it came out okay. I bought thin project ready stock from Cherokee woods, 1/8 " thick. Then added 3/4" thick 10"x 24" board for bowl / crown. This is maple wood. So I cut a maple leaf topper using 45 deg table tilt. I have lots of pictures during the making of this Maple Cowboy Hat. But for now I will attach 5. This hat conforms to my head. I bought a drafting curve tool 30" and wrapped it around my head. Then traced it on paper and scanned into computer. With inkscape I created a curve path and made my head shape. With the "linked offset" tool I made 8 lines with 1/8" offset. This is my pattern. The 3rd picture shows 2 rings cut and the pattern. Yes I have an eggshaped head. I have about 20 hours into the project. Ok that was the intro. I did have inspiration from: OCTOOLGUY Dave Monk Also Ruth Niles from Niles bottle stoppers. Youtube "wooden cowboy hats". There is a song from Chris LeDoux named "This Cowboy Hat". I was so inspired by this project, I thought I could change the words to the song. If you are interest in a personal message of new words to the song. I can provide that. The last pic shows a quick small prototype / test, I did before I started this project. Small test used 1/4" baltic birch plywood. Me. Mark Eason
  9. very good job. I like the lighter frame better. Me. Mark Eason
  10. Just sayin, a lever action and a black hat. I see trouble.
  11. Thanks for the update. I am glad you did not have to rebuild the whole site from backups. I probably overloaded it with my pictures in personal emails.
  12. Frank, Nice piece. Good angle cut on the base. Adds the touch of a statue. I am making something out of maple right now. Maple can be pretty with its orange tint. I like orange cats. What was your last sanding grit before 1st layer of finish? Me. Mark Eason
  13. Hi PeteL I have learned so much from this village. It is great that you started with questions. But we need a bit more info. So does the saw still work? Nothing smoked. Can you hold the foot switch down and turn on the saw? My saw needs the foot switch down for about 3 seconds. This is called a soft start feature. Is the foot switch you bought a speed controller unit? Me. Mark Eason
  14. Wow, Those tracks seem to be alot of work. Nice job. I see you did quality tests in the dirt also. Some residual dirt is on the shelf and in the tracks. Is it better than tonka toys? Me. Mark Eason
  15. If you do another version the blue lake looks good. Might enhance the fish by water color for trout patterns. But golem is good as it is. He is a colorless character. Me. Mark Eason
  16. In the description of wands , in the books, a special feather or quill from a bird is used inside a wizard wand. So an extra touch to you gift is to add a feather inside the compond cut handle. Or have her find a special feather and put it in the handle. Me. Mark Eason
  17. Frank, Nice work. I also experienced a bit of paduak dust on one of my projects. The lily flower. How did you align the top and bottom smaller hearts? Eye ball? Did you use weights for gluing? how did you prevent slipage during glue process? Me. Mark Eason
  18. I like the skulls cracks. it looks good. But the color of the background does not bring out the oak pieces.
  19. Yes ! Great idea of using aspen and purple heart. Looks very professional.
  20. That is pretty cool how the cats head becomes the shape between the legs of another cat. The orange cat does stand out quite a bit. But it is good for halloween. If you do tone it down consider making it a calico. Thats another way of reducing the orange.
  21. Nice job. Using vinly prints is on my list to do. Foil embossing is a cool. Foil sticks to vinyl ? Me. Mark Eason
  22. How do we envision this kind of work before starting. Dave Monk shows this ability time after time. He also has something more to each art piece. Maybe smoother sanding? better finish techniques? The expert craftmanship just shows. But probably the end vision of elegant outcome is what I lack. Me. Mark Eason
  23. nice. I love the blue felt choice . A Stargate timepiece? Why did you choose the shape of an eye?
  24. you know you could take your phone camera , grab a photo of each recipe and scroll saw each one. That does 2 things. Preserves the recipes and hand notes on a computer, also gives you alot of patterns. I guess if you make the recipe cards bigger you will need a bigger box. Or hang the the good ones on the wall. Maybe magnets on the back for refridgerator recipes.
  25. Wow. Such eligant pieces.
