greasemonkeyredneck Posted August 21, 2009 Report Posted August 21, 2009 Christmas came early. A buddy of mine that tinkers in my shop once in a while was given this Total Shop machine. He has nowhere to keep it, so he brought it to my shop. He's gettin on in age. He says it's mine. He just wants access to it whenever he decides to tinker around with it. It was rusted up pretty bad. I cleaned everything up and greased everything. Then I plugged it up and it runs like new. The 12" disk sander works great. The drill press, slash boring machine, works great. The attachments for the lathe and table saw are too rusted up to do anything with. I don't need those two anyway, but I am going to start checking places like EBay for parts. I'd like to have all the attachments just to say I have it and to keep it all working. I may need them one day. The Total Shop, from what I have found on the internet is similar to the Shopsmith. It was a competitor of the Shopsmith in the mid 80s. Quote
grampa Posted August 21, 2009 Report Posted August 21, 2009 That will be great in the workshop I hope santa pays me a visit Quote
Travis Posted August 21, 2009 Report Posted August 21, 2009 That looks like a lot of fun to play with. Even with duplicate tools, its nice to have one machine set up for a specific task rather than breaking them down. Congrats to the new shop addition! Quote
greasemonkeyredneck Posted August 21, 2009 Author Report Posted August 21, 2009 The disk sander and drill press are the main things I will use on it anyway. I am working on the carousel horse and it has already come in handy. The sanding of the saddle area would have probably took a lot of time on my little 6" disk. With this 12" though, I carefully lined everything up and one swipe across it and everything was sanded perfectly. The only thing left was to take a hand rasp and finish up right in the corners where the disk sander made a circular cut. Also, if I'd had it a week ago, I wouldn't have had the problems with the hole through te center of the horse. If any of you have been keeping up with the WIP of the horse, you may remember the problems I had with the hole because I didn't have a press. Quote
qlty Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 Another good place to look for parts is Crags list, its free and you can post a wanted ad there Quote
wood-n-things Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 You can never have too many tools...Good for you and the carousel horse is a work of art. Quote
greasemonkeyredneck Posted September 12, 2009 Author Report Posted September 12, 2009 You can never have too many tools...Good for you and the carousel horse is a work of art. Thanks for the carousel compliment. For every good thing in my shop seems to have a bad reaction. Now my 6x48 belt sander is gone. Long story, it's gone. Tomorrow is my birthday and my son just started a new job. He says next weekend that he and I are driving to Jackson to get me a belt sander. I recently done another motorcycle. The 12" disk got the job done on the tires and rims, but the belt sander would have been nicer. It was a bear holding on to it on that disk. It threw so much fine sawdust that by the time I got them sanded down, you couldn't even see m tattoos and even with a dust mask, I was hacking up sawdust for an hour. Quote
