My name is William Day. I live in Vicksburg, Mississippi. I fish the Mississippi River a lot. I fish mostly for catfish and spoonbill. My favorite way to fish is on my boat. I have a sixteen foot Bass Tracker with a forty horse Mercury. There are also plenty of ponds and lakes in my area. I like to go to some of them from time to time and fish for bream. Bass fishing is real big in this area, but I've never been much into bass. I've heard a lot of people say they like them because of the fight. I've caught bass and I've caught spoonbill, and I believe if they like a fish that fights, they ought to try the spoons. A bass can't put up a fight like that.

Here in Mississippi, we've had to have fishing liscense for years now. They're only nine bucks and change though and the money goes to some good preservation projects, so I don't mind that. Actually, I'm disabled, so I could fish without a liscense. I go ahead and buy them every year any way. It's easier to carry the lisense card than my disability letter, and, as I said before, the money goes to good causes. As for the limits, some of the fish I catch are limited too. The spoonbills are the main ones. They have a limit of two to a person per day. They were an endangered species for a while there though, so I can respect that limit. We have some idiots here though that throw them on the bank because they don't know how to clean them.

When I have time, I'll post photos of spoonbill cleaning. You have to clean them a certain way to make sureyou get the mar (spinal cord) out. If you don't, the mar contains some kind of chemical that can make you very sick if it is ruptured in the meat.

We have plenty of alligator gar here. A lot of people throw them on the bank. They consider them a nuisance fish. I just can't do that though. I'm not killing anything I won't eat. The small ones I return to the water. The large ones (over 20 lbs.), I know a few people that do it them that I'll take them too.

Under an algae control plan a few years back, the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries introduced our river with Asian Carp. I've never eat one. I keep saying if I ever catch one big enough I'm going to give them a try.

We also have in this area, bass, perch, bream, catfish, and multiple other lesser known species that I know little about. Those are just the ones I fish for. You'll also catch an occassional turtle. If they're big enough, I'll eat those. Certain times of the year, they also have a lottery type deal for permits to alligator . I've tried alligator and love it. I don't care to hunt or fish alligator though. The regulations say you have to bring them in alive, and there is no way I'm wrestling a live alligator in so they can tag it before I kill it. I love the meat, but not enough tochance losing my arm, or any other body parts.
