Please forgive me for posting a question that has already been asked a hundred times, but is it possible to use inkscape to create a portrait pattern from a photograph? I am completely new to portrait pattern design and I am not sure if inkscape is the better choice or would gimp, for example produce a better portrait. I would greatly appreciate any help from anyone who can steer me in the right direction.

GIMP is a better choice for making scroll saw portraits.  That way you can use filters and painting to assist the design process.  Inkscape is good for pretty much everything else.  We have tutorials in the Village University forum and they're also available in the Articles section in the navigation bar at the top of the screen.
