It is definitely a nice idea and could be a big seller if marketed right. Everyone is telling him to get a patent for the idea and may not be a bad idea.

Personally I think that the dowel fasteners are a distraction.  If the intent is to have them permanently joined, I would have used glue. 

To each there own.

It is done on purpose as he said. It is a ritual. It is the whole concept that is remarkable. It is a bit of thinking outside the box. I like it just the way it is. Maybe make it in a smaller size and gussy up the stand a bit but other than that it works.
