olEddie Posted February 10, 2017 Report Posted February 10, 2017 Hello every one! This is my first post and as with many folks here it's for seeking help. Before I dive in to my problem, I'd like to thank for all the great info posted on the website as well as all the tips shared. It's a new hobby for me, which so far I am enjoying tremendously and the information you guys have is just terrific. I'm trying to accomplish a simple task in Inkscape, but I can't seem to find the right answer. Here's what I have so far: I would like to make my city object go around the inner circle. I understand how this function works with text, but I can't seem to get it to work with the circle and the city object created. Can you please let me know which function would work for that? I'm considering two ways of doing this, one is for the city to stretch around the entire circle or perhaps just half way (180 degrees). I'll know once I see it. Finally, did any one try to cut through LP's with a scroll saw? I'd assume it would work, but just not sure of problems I may face. I guess I'll know soon enough Either way I will be tracing this to wood as well, but wanted to give it a shot on a vinyl first. Thanks and I hope I'm not taking up too much of your time with this. worbler Posted February 11, 2017 Report Posted February 11, 2017 I just googled the problem you are having and gave it a go, you won't like the outcome. You can find the answer here: https://graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/28763/how-to-create-a-rounded-wave-rectangle-like-this-on-inkscape. I have heard of records being cut with the scroll saw but I would imagine you would need to place it between 2 sheets of ply or mdf, to stop it breaking. You would also want to slow the saw right down and use a fine blade. Placing the pattern on the LP in a straight line across the top would probably be the better option, low enough down so you get it all in and leave the bottom intact. Good luck no matter which way you choose. Quote
olEddie Posted February 11, 2017 Author Report Posted February 11, 2017 Thanks for the advice, Worbler. I am beginning to think I'll need to put the vinyl idea on hold. I'm afraid the scroll saw I have does not have speed control. I was going for a good brand (hegner) but their multiple speed saws were just out of my price range, so I'm fixed at 1400. I can only control the speed with how fast I feed the material, I guess. As for the provided link, I'm not getting the results explained. I'll keep exploring why on earth it's not working but thank you anyways. Now I know where to look for the needed function. You did mention I won't like the result - do you think it will be way too stretched out? Quote
worbler Posted February 11, 2017 Report Posted February 11, 2017 This is the result I got of adding your city scape to a circular path in Inkscape. Quote
olEddie Posted February 11, 2017 Author Report Posted February 11, 2017 Wow! That looks nothing like what I'm trying to accomplish. I may need to rethink how I draw circular objects. Thanks a bunch and if interested, I can check back once I try the vinyl cutout ... if any success at all that is. Quote

Welcome to the forum. I'm guessing you were looking for something a little more like this? If so, post a better picture in the Pattern Requests and I'm sure someone will be happy to give it a shot.. worbler Posted February 11, 2017 Report Posted February 11, 2017 You might be better off creating a bezier curve and wrapping the cityscape around that. Then overlay that onto the LP. When you get to the opposite of the curve just double click to end it, don't join back to the start or it becomes another edge. Have fun with whatever you are trying to do. Quote

worbler Posted February 12, 2017 Report Posted February 12, 2017 I've been playing around with this idea on and off all day and it's going nowhere fast. No matter how you put this image, and many others I'd imagine, on a curve it's gonna look ugly. Found this online, which you may have seen, and thought maybe you'd be better of trying this. Quote

jerry1939 Posted February 13, 2017 Report Posted February 13, 2017 I once tried straight text (names), rotating them as needed and putting them around the edge of a trivet. FAILED !! Couldn't maintain a uniform size on the names. On your skyline, could you draw a circle, use the Bezier to create as many buildings as needed and delete the circle when done? Don't know if you could accomplish what you want. I don't think you could make "the buildings" touch the circle as you work. Always remember, when you complete a little bit, save it. That way if you mess up later, you can "Close without Saving." Open it up again and you will start from your last SAVE. Also, EDIT - UNDO LAST MOVE is your friend. You can repeat as needed. Hope this helps Friend. jerry Quote

Russell Russell, your picture is exactly right and that's what I'm trying to accomplish - city scape going in a full circle without any distortion. I didn't have a chance to sit down at the computer yesterday, but perhaps I can give it another shot tonight with some advice posted and perhaps more stuff I can find online. Now it's a matter of principle and curiosity how this can be accomplished. Birchbark 1 Quote
