Got an email yesterday - JGR has released an updated 2nd Edition of the book "Wildlife Intarsia" published by SSWC.  Find information here on her site: https://intarsia.com/products/wildlife-intarsia-getting-started-book - it includes 4 new patterns that were not in the 1st edition looks like - a bear cub, a lion cub, wolf head, and the baby elephant that we did in last year's intermediate class. Site indicates first 50 orders from her site get Judy's autograph on the book.

Info. on her site notes the following:

"Getting Started" walks you through all the techniques involved in creating intarsia.

The Book includes: 16 Total patterns with color photos for each. The price is $19.95, making each pattern about $1.25 ea.

5 Projects that will walk you through each step: Bald Eagle, Wild Mustang, Bull Moose, Elephant and Polar Bear.

11 Patterns including some instruction: Red Fox, Arctic Wolf, Bobcat, Buffalo, White-Tailed Deer, Jack Rabbit, Big Horn Ram, Raccoon, Wolf, Black Bear Cub and Lion Cub.

Not affiliated but had gotten the email and thought I would share with the Intarsia enthusiast here. Haven't decided yet whether or not I will be getting. Probably.  Need to see with patterns I already have first though. I love the Baby elephant we did which is now in the book.

Hi Jim.  While I don't have this particular book - either edition (yet), I have had a few of her other books.  I do like the books in that you get a good number of patterns in them so it provides more bang for your buck in regards to building a library of patterns to work with. Since I don't have this book, or haven't seen it fully myself I am not sure that I an say for a fact that it is a good book for a beginner.  However, it sounds like it could be since they note it has a "getting started" section that walks you through all the techniques in creating intarsia. 5 full projects that walk you through each step and others.  I would not hesitate to get the book if I was interested in learning Intarsia work.  If you want more information or to see what Judy herself says I wouldn't hesitate to reach out to them through the website - email or phone - their phone listed is a toll free number.

Jim, I have the first edition book and it gives instructions.   However it is like many things, some can do things from book instructions, others do much better with classroom type instructions.   I have done very little intarsia, and only a couple simple things, using written instructions.  With practice, I think I could have gotten much better, how ever with classroom learning, I think I could get better much faster.  The book will certainly give you the basics and get you started.

I received my copy and it was a signed one. All I need now is time.

I had done a few Intarsia pieces and then took an intermediate class. The class was great and pointed me in new directions regarding my approach to shaping.

But what was really  great for me was using the sanding tools that Judy has in her classroom. I went home and built myself a large pneumatic drum sander, a must in my opinion if you plan on doing lots of intarsia.
