I continued on a previous thread but decided to start a fresh one.

My first few efforts have thrown up the following issues;

  • Today I adjusted a layer and the pattern finished off with a very yellow hue. I had been messing around with channels before hand but I did not think I changed anything permanently.
  • Another issue with layers is when I adjust the pattern in Photocopy, then decide to re-adjust the pattern by re adjustng the sliders, the second adjustment  seems to work on the previous adjustment only and not bring me back to the  original adjustment. I know its a bad description but I'm trying to ask am I the only one?

I am still learning so what I have been doing is duplicating each layer two or three times so when the pattern goes askew I just delete the whole layer and move onto the next layer.

Right now I've come across another issue;

  • I accidently clicked on the fuzzy tool in the toolbox and could not turn it back to a cursor, so I clicked on other buttons including Pointer in the dockable dialogs. Right now my cursor is the crop tool. How do I turn it back to a cursor. I'm about to delete what I've done as it was going nowhere but I just know I'll end up in the same place again.

OK, now I've created a new project based on the same photo and then deleted the old one but I've just realised that the cursor is still the Crop tool, so I cant do anything till I can turn it back to a cursor.

Not sure if I am understanding the question correctly but are you saying you cannot just click on like the eraser tool or brush etc and get rid of the crop tool as if it is locked on ?? I simply click the next tool I want to use in the tool box and the crop tool changes to the one I pick ?? or am I not reading the question right

Thanks Frank. Yes my cursor has ceased to be a cursor. It changes to whatever button I press but I cant figure out how to turn it back to a cursor. It turns to a cursor whenever it is not over the pattern but as soon as I move it over the pattern it reverts to the last button pressed.

Me again, another intermittant fault that I'm getting is sometimes the 'duplicate layer' button is greyed out and I cant move on to the next stage.

I've been at GIMP for about 10 days,  I have a laptop and I also borrowed a laptop and downloaded the latest version of GIMP onto both laptops. Then I followed Travis on one and replicated what he was doing on the second one at the same time. I also have printed off the text that is in each video explaining things so I'm fairly sure I'm following the steps correctly. My problems with layers and with the cursor seem to totally intermittant so I've no real idea why.

Tonight I'm about to start back at lesson 1 and work through them one by one so we'll see how she goes.

Regarding not being able to duplicate layers because the button is greyed out as stated previously, What I eventually discovered is;

Press 'Anchor layer'. [this button is just below the duplicate button] What this did was send my picture down one level into the base layer and suddenly I'm free to duplicate layers again.

 another issue has arisen;

  • The brush selection in 2.8.22 is full of stuff that I don't know what to do with and has only a few real brush sizes or shapes so I designed my own, size 5, but there is no 'save' button or button combination that I can find to save it.
