Huntter2022 Posted October 4, 2010 Report Posted October 4, 2010 For riserer you can Buy 1/8' ply at Lowes or Home Depot Recutting on a Table saw can be done but be really carefull Doing it on a scroll saw might be hard keeping it flat Quote
Brian Posted October 4, 2010 Report Posted October 4, 2010 Get some Luan plywood. The ony thing its good for is making risers and backer boards. I tried cutting portraits and other fine detail projects, but it doesnt have a very solid core which make it a poor choice for portrait cuttings. Quote
cjswoodcrafts Posted October 4, 2010 Author Report Posted October 4, 2010 hunter and brian thanks for the info, will get some 1/8 plywood soon, i got all the pieces cut on the project, its a golf theme tie piece.. kind of cool, gonna make 2 of them for one of my docs and my uncle Yeah i agree with luan, i tried it once making a portrait of my mom and dad, got to cutting a small area, and piece broke, but it does good for wood burning and relief carving, i made a portrait for a friend of mine daughter,,, used beeswax to finish it, came out nice thanks again for the info Quote
amazingkevin Posted October 5, 2010 Report Posted October 5, 2010 Excuse me, But i don't know what a riser is.help help. do i need one? Quote
Brian Posted October 5, 2010 Report Posted October 5, 2010 A riser is to raise the wood out of an intarsia piece. It supports the wood on the back to give a 3 dimension look. Quote
Huntter2022 Posted October 5, 2010 Report Posted October 5, 2010 Kevin Risers are also referred to as shims. Is a thin piece of wood put under one or more pieces of a Intarsia project to rise it above the surrounding piece. The riser is the same shape as the piece but slightly smaller It gives your project more depth Quote
amazingkevin Posted October 5, 2010 Report Posted October 5, 2010 Thank you Brian, i forgot to do that on the dog in the shoe intarsia piece a while back and it would have added a nice effect if i did.It was the dogs paws that should have been raised.I could fix it now but it's a good reminder, lolIt's 13" wide x 14" tall Quote
wdkits1 Posted October 7, 2010 Report Posted October 7, 2010 I don't use risers or shims in my intarsia. I just resaw the woods to the correct thickness to start with. Saves alot of time in the long run. Quote
Dan Posted October 7, 2010 Report Posted October 7, 2010 Here's a thought for wood misers like me ...I see a lot of TV cabinets and such that people put in their trash. Sometimes the back board on these are 1/8" plywood. These could be used as risers...and they are about as cheap as they can be. Dan Quote
amazingkevin Posted October 24, 2010 Report Posted October 24, 2010 Anybody working on any intarsia projects lately? Quote
