Get some Luan plywood. The ony thing its good for is making risers and backer boards. I tried cutting portraits and other fine detail projects, but it doesnt have a very solid core which make it a poor choice for portrait cuttings.

thanks for the info, will get some 1/8 plywood soon, i got all the pieces cut on the project, its a golf theme tie piece.. kind of cool, gonna make 2 of them for one of my docs and my uncle

Yeah i agree with luan, i tried it once making a portrait of my mom and dad, got to cutting a small area, and piece broke, but it does good for wood burning and relief carving, i made a portrait for a friend of mine daughter,,, used beeswax to finish it, came out nice

thanks again for the info

Risers are also referred to as shims.

Is a thin piece of wood put under one or more pieces of a Intarsia project to rise it above the surrounding piece. The riser is the same shape as the piece but slightly smaller

It gives your project more depth

Thank you Brian, i forgot to do that on the dog in the shoe intarsia piece a while back and it would have added a nice effect if i did.It was the dogs paws that should have been raised.I could fix it now but it's a good reminder,lolpost-2756-134955545132_thumb.jpgIt's 13" wide x 14" tall

Here's a thought for wood misers like me :D ...I see a lot of TV cabinets and such that people put in their trash. Sometimes the back board on these are 1/8" plywood. These could be used as risers...and they are about as cheap as they can be.
