how do i turn a color picture to black and white

I'm new to using gimp i'm trying to learn how to turn a color picture to black and white can any one help me please

Colors dropdown menu.  Go to "Desaturate", then select "Desaturate".  That'll take the color out.  Then you can play with curves and brightness/contrast.
