I thought a couple of you might find this hack useful. When I started woodworking I thought "C" clamps were a pain to use. I made these changes and find them much improved. I cut off the handle of the C clamp and put it in the bin. Then cut off a section of broom handle or large dowel, drilled it to accept the  handle end of the adjusting screw. Finally I drilled through the new handle and the old handle opening and drove in a dowel. I've never wanted to back to the old style. I know I can't apply as much force as modified, but I've never had a problem with any application I used them for.

Full transparency here: this is not my idea, I copied it from a TV show.
