This makes me think of a story. I was a draft dodger myself. enlisted in the Air Force.  I worked as civilian for the Marine Corp finance center for a couple of years in the early 80's. I always admired the spirit of the Marines.

We were housed in a large GSA building. There was an older guy who worked as a painter and always rode a service cart around the long hallways. The Marines made a big deal of the Marine Corp birthday. They had a ceremony, and all of the Marines and civilians gathered around the flagpole. Oddly the old painter was upfront and all of the Marine brass were talking to him and making a big deal of him.  He was a big deal, he was a Medal of Honor recipient.
