Bzern Posted August 15, 2012 Report Posted August 15, 2012 I recently picked up hand carving (something to do when I am away from my scroll saw), and I am pretty bad, but I am getting better, I carve little (3 to 4 inches tall) caricature people, but I can never get their eyes. I was wondering if anyone has any advice. Thanks a bunch. Ben Quote
Travis Posted August 16, 2012 Report Posted August 16, 2012 I find YouTube to be an awesome resource for learning techniques like that. Its so much easier seeing someone do it than reading about it. Good luck with your search! Quote
jdbcarving Posted August 25, 2012 Report Posted August 25, 2012 I have been carving for 18 years, eyes are made lots of different ways. You can do a little triangle shape, use your gouges to make a recess grove and make oval, tear drop, or round eyes. depends what you are carving. Some just do a flat area and paint them in. U tube has some good sites for carving. Lots of idea's out there, just take your time and practice. Same as scrolling, I have a hard time scrolling straight lines, some times works sometimes not. Have to set that sucker over about 30 deg to the right and hope it tracks okay. 1/8" material is a real pistol for me, walks around. Jim B Quote
