Popular Post jimmyG Posted September 11, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted September 11, 2024 Since cold weather is right around the corner I decided not to spend much time in the shop trying to keep warm. I started a week ago working with resin casting. It's a little expensive to get started and whatever you make you have to wait almost 15-20 hours to find out if you did good or not. I'll probably still scroll saw some when the temps are not too extreme and to fill the time while the casting projects are curing. At least it's a climate controlled hobby. This old dog just wants to learn some new tricks! RabidAlien, JTTHECLOCKMAN, TexasDIY and 8 others 11 Quote
Scrappile Posted September 11, 2024 Report Posted September 11, 2024 Interesting. Are some of those flower blossoms? OCtoolguy 1 Quote

Hawk Posted September 13, 2024 Report Posted September 13, 2024 Looks like a great start. I too have been experimenting with resin, no where near as good as yours....yet (lol) OCtoolguy 1 Quote
JJB Posted September 13, 2024 Report Posted September 13, 2024 Great looking projects! The problem with resin is it's addictive. The other problem is that it is expensive. That's a bad combo. Hawk and OCtoolguy 1 1 Quote

Luckily I caught on pretty fast at scroll sawing and made a ton of projects my first year. What I don't like about working with resin is I can't really see if I made a gem or a turd until many hours later. Unmolding the next day is like Christmas morning, hoping for a train set instead of underwear JJB and OCtoolguy 2 Quote
JTTHECLOCKMAN Posted September 14, 2024 Report Posted September 14, 2024 (edited) Very interesting I do know a little bit about casting resins so I should understand your answers. But I am looking at the objects you presented. The bear paw or dog paw dish is pretty explanatory in that a mold is used. The different flower items are intriguing. The blue on especially. The other 2, are these clear cast with items inserted in the casting resin to get that effect? The blue one looks like a clear cast with actual colored resins, dyes or something else poured into the resin at specific times to create the illusion of the flower. if this be the case I have not seen this and it is truely an artform. Could you explain your methods of each items some so we can enjoy what you are doing on a better level. This is different casting than what I am use to. What resins are you using.?? The dog paw was a mold. The others were coaster molds. I poured a layer of clear resin, dropped various colors of alcohol ink and let them sprea mixed white pigment with resin and when thick enough put in piping bag to make a flower or just a circle shape. Took toothpick to pull the white in or out to make petals. After curing the bottom right I poured a black background on it. Used Just Resin brand 1:1 mix ratio. Watching YouTube videos and hoping to absorb some knowledge... OCtoolguy 1 Quote

Then just stuck a chopstick and dis a swirl starting in the center outward. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
JTTHECLOCKMAN Posted September 14, 2024 Report Posted September 14, 2024 I thought you were creating the illusions with dyes of inks and matting somehow. This takes an artistic eye for sure. Like what you are doing. Keep us updated as you progress. OCtoolguy and JJB 2 Quote
