I know type 1 Dewalts hold some sort of mythical status within the scrolling community, but the last one was produced decades ago.  It's got to be pretty long in the tooth, such that I'd want to look it over pretty thoroughly and not pay more for it just because it's a type 1.

I agree that myth has been around since I had a Dewalt saw.   Dewalt would not be such a popular saw if the type 2s were so bad.

I bought a type 2 back shortly after they came out.  Didn't know anything about the difference at the time.  There was a lot of conversation on the scrolling forums about all the quality issues the first few production runs of type 2's were experiencing.  I never had any of those problems.  In reality I think they got them ironed out fairly quickly. My Dewalt was pretty much trouble free the whole time I had it.  Ironically, I replaced it with an EX-21 (pre-move to China) to get a better saw and it broke down on me last year.

No when the type #2 saws came out and made in China there were a ton of problems with them . It did take some time sorting them out. Some of the problems could be corrected with in home solves and they showed up on forums many times. The Type ones were made in Canada. The big difference between Type#1   and #2 is the motor. They are different designs. But the ones made in China were having problems with table alignments and poor grease fittings because they were hardly ever greased. Along with a few other problems.

I also bought a new type 2 back in 08 and I never had any real issues with it for the first 3-4 years of running it quite hard.. then the bearings where shot so rebuilt it and ran it quite hard again for about 4 more years.. person I sold it to is still using it.
