I have never tried intarsia and said as much to a friend, I also said I would like to try it. Within a few days I received an email picture of his family crest. The picture is rubbish, its blurred and pixelated. my question is, is this type of thing suitable for intarsia and what steps do I need to take to turn it into a pattern, it is so much different to portrait pattern making. thanks.

The hardest part will probably be the ornate area outside of the family crest which I believe is called the Mantle or Mantling.

This does not bear any special significance with the surname, as far as I know so, you can take great liberty to choose anything you feel comfortable with to adorn the crest itself.

This link may help you find some samples. http://www.heraldryc...m/features.html

The family crest for the name Neumann which you show seems fairly simple. Just a bent arm holding an arrow.

I'd just try to section portions of the image you want so that you can cut them out with varying grain direction and shape them accordingly.

Hopefully there will be an attachment with the start of a pattern for you to consider.

You are very welcome.

You may also to choose to have the Family Crest or Shield held by two lions, one facing right, the other facing left, holding the crest between.

Probably much easier than a lot of foliage around the emblem.
