  1. Don, That is brilliant! Thank you so much. The Claddagh symbols are a really nice touch. I will post the finished effort when done. You really are a talented bunch! Thanks, Mel
  2. Hi, thanks for the response. I had already given the badge/crest some thought but not sure if it could be altered to incorporate the words I want also plus figuring how to cut the spines on the silver part of the crest i.e. Would a single cut for each spine do it? Grandpa: He served for over 30 years in uniform and CID. Unfortunately during the later part of his service he got injured and spent the remainder of his time doing station office duties. Anyway, I have attached an image of the crest and would appreciate any advice Thanks, Mel
  3. Hi all, I have a friend who will shortly be retiring from our department and I wanted to cut him a pattern to celebrate the fact. I have searched the gallery but can't find anything suitable. I am hoping that someone can give me a few ideas or samples of patterns that I can use. His name is "Tom" and he is Irish. If possible I would like "A.R.B. Champ" somewhere on the pattern. Thanks in anticipation, Mel
  4. Thanks guys. Rusty, My first attempt was the one of my granddaughter the pattern was created by a fellow scroller, the other 2 I did from start to finish. As hardwood is difficult to get hold of in the UK (and expensive) I used 1/4 inch MDF which I then veneered with American oak. I wanted to spray paint the silver surround on the frame black to give them a bit more contrast but my other half didn't agree. And I know what's good for me!!
  5. It's been a long time coming but I finally got around to finishing the portraits of my grandkids. Decided to use shop bought frames in the end. Thanks for all the advice Mel
  6. Closest I ever got to this is when I was a kid built a cart with pram wheels and borrowed one of mums bed sheets fashioned a mast and headed for a local disused airfield. Great fun!
  7. Wow!!!! Speechless
  8. Hi all, I thought I would post my latest attempt at a portrait. I know it's not a patch on some of the amazing work that is done by other members on here but I'm feeling quite proud that I have completed this project from start to finish I.e. Taking photograph, editing and cutting. Still haven't made my mind up about framing yet. One more grandchild to do then I have the set! Regards to all Mel
  9. Hi Kal, Welcome, I'm Mel from the UK
  10. One lucky neighbour! If only it wasn't so difficult to get hard wood in the UK Nice job Roly
  11. Another great idea, thanks proxprof
  12. Hi Gary, Like you I am a newcomer to the forum and can confirm they are a great bunch of people only to willing to help. Like others I bought an entry level saw just to see how I got on, found that it is very addictive and bought myself a decent machine. Good advice from Dick although I have found that absence does make the heart grow fonder Welcome Mel
  13. Obsessed Scroller could you point me in the direction to some images re burned effects - Thanks
  14. Thanks Guys, Lot of food for thought. As for routing the edges I do have a router but I'm afraid my router skills are not that brilliant. Great idea for frame joints Spirithorse I would never had thought of that and one I will definately try out. I think I will go for a pattern on this occasion thanks for the examples. Mel
