  1. I added these to my album and need to describe them. The first is a Compact spiked Mobius Ribbon made using the scrollsaw and consists of 2 x 1/2 bowls and 10 x 1/4 bowls using the bowl from a board method. I used 1/2" plywood and there are 5 layers in each segment, I used the 8 pointed star as a guide, reduced the size of the segments from my previous effort hence the more compact result. Sorry I didn't do photos of the stage by stage construction but I wasn't sure it would work. Maybe if I ever do another I will do a full coverage. The second project is a scrollsaw mobious ribbon which I cut various breed of dogs in each segment before gluing up. This was given to a ex Aussie veteran who was a dog handler in Iraq and Afghanistan.
  2. Questioned if I thought a Mobius Ribbon could be made on the scroll saw using a pointed star for the theme. I started with a 6 pointed star but using 1/2 and 1/4 bowls sections I found the 1/4's had uneven sides so I went to an 8 pointed star and got a result. I used the bowl from a board method to cut 2 1/2 and 10 1/4 sections of 4 layers approx 1/2 wide, not being to crash hot on the scroll saw I had difficulty with the tight inner points and got a lot of burns. I used 1/2" plywood and stained it mainly to hide the burns. Also enclosed a couple of pics of the seperate sections prior to glue up.
  3. This is the second and possibly the second last carved mobius ribbon I'll do (have a horse one in the mix at the moment). They are to time consuming but are very exhilarating, especially when gluing up the last few sections, will they meet or not? Sold this to a pet shop owner but never get paid for the hours worked but still fun creating. Still having trouble convincing scroll sawers out here that they are done on a scroll saw ( bowl from a board seems simple enough to me to understand) they believe mobius ribbons are carved.
  4. Danny, cutting a bowl from a board can't come out flat. Use 1/2" plywood cut 1/2" rings on the scrollsaw at 45 degrees to get 1/2 and 1/4 bowls. Sparky look up Google - Scroll saw Mobius images and you will find Spencer Blooms award winning Mobius Ribbon, go to his page on Lumberjocks and follow him to his Wavy Ribbon for further how to guide.
  5. Charley, I did a how to on the bragging rights forum but the main thing is 2x1/2bowls and 10x1/4 bowls which are cut on the scroll saw doing the bowl from a board. Have a look at Spencer Blooms page on www.patrioticwoodworker where he explains his method. He originated this in 2012 but no one took him up on it, I was lucky enough he sent me the how to late last year. Using ply wood you can't see the joins from the bowl from a board which makes it harder to convince people that is not just bent, the joining up is the tricky part but I'm sure you guys can work that out. The additional scroll sawing and carving was my idea. Have fun.
  6. Ron, the Mobius ribbon consists of 2 x1/2 and 10x1/4 bowls which are cut on the scroll saw using the bowl from a board method. I was shown this method by Spencer Bloom who created this in 2012, he has instructions on his pages on Patrioticwoodworker and Lumberjocks, worth a look as he took out a major scroll sawing award that year with his Mobius. The gluing up is the tricky part and I did get different results in the first 2 photos. The additional scroll sawing and carving was an idea of mine. Accuracy in the cutting and gluing of the sections is crucial for getting a neat final join. Hope this covers it. Spencer's user name on Lumberjocks is "SAWTOOTH",
  7. I'm bragging because I am the only person in Australia to have made a Mobius Ribbon on the scroll saw and certainly the only one to have enhanced one with carvings (see last pic)
  8. Been hard convincing other scroll sawers that a Mobius Ribbon can be cut on a scroll saw so I added some extra scroll sawing and carving to get some interest.
  9. Nearly missed replying sorry. Thanks for the comments. Faye, I did use more wedges than the video suggested, I cut them thinner and used 10 wedges with 48 segments.
  10. Thanks for the great comments. Fish, I didn't work to a pattern, I noticed that the majority of shells produced were basically the same stereo type so I played around with the size and angle of the wedges, to be a bit different.
  11. These are my latest attempts at spiral shells. Both made with Marine Ply Wood, the smaller one is just under 3" diam and had 42 segments and has 4 spirals. I cut the wedges for the larger shell with the grain up and got a completely different effect.
  12. This is done from marine ply wood and approx. 9" diam.
