While watching a woodworking show on TV I had an epiphany! The best way to make the hole is to use a router with a guide bushing. Just make a template with the size of the hole ( just a fraction larger to accommodate the edge of the bushing) and use the router to plough out the hole to the depth necessary. Thanks for the suggestions. Sometimes the solution just happens...

My Family bought me a new Shop Fox 16" variable speed scroll saw after my Delta went puff. I read some reviews and for the price it looks terrific. My problem is that is uses as a standard, a pinned blade. There is an attachment for a straight blade, which I prefer to get into the small detail work, but the attachment is awful and I am having a terrible time with it. The pinned blades are easy to change and work with for bigger holes, but I like to do some work with holes too small to fit the pins back through. Has anyone used the Shop Fox and found an easy way to manage using straight pins?

Thanks Travis, as I thought about it, the pattern is two dimensional so I cannot see if the bottom was concave from being sanded to remove the point. That may be the way it is done.

I have a pattern that was given to me for a pair of votive candle holders within a simple scroll sawn design. The two inch and a half recessed circles that hold the candles have a perfectly smooth bottom. I can't figure out how this is done. I have a Forstner bit the right size but it leaves a point in the center. Can anyone tell me how to complete this with a smooth bottom...no jokes...

I bought a scroll saw about 14 years ago and I am finally able to have the time to do some things with it. I saw a pattern for a scroll saw bowl with overlapping rings. Well the scroll work came out fine, but I am having problems with how to finish it. I made two extra rings, and put a Watco finish on, and that looked good, but I wanted to give it some shine so I used a spray urethane and even though I did the sprays lightly and took plenty of time to let them dry, after three coats there were missed spots, some drips and not what I was looking for. So here I am with about 10 rings, stained, without a finish. Any advice from the group? Ray from Rehoboth, MA
