I'm proud to announce that SSV's Ornaments For Charity 2019 edition eBook is now available! For the last 10 years, members of Scroll Saw Village have donated their talents to designing ornaments for this unique eBook of patterns. We're continuing our tradition here at Scroll Saw Village by publishing our annual e-Book full of Christmas ornaments. This popular e-Book was featured in the Holiday 2014 issue of Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts magazine. Our ornament designs are exclusive to this eBook and designed by SSV members. Anyone can download the ebook in exchange for a donation to their favorite charity. Our hope is that we'd be able to raise some money for very worthy causes and provide some cool patterns at the same time. *** But we need your help! *** We need some volunteers to design some ornaments. Each designer will provide 5 patterns (no more, no less) I ask that the designs are not made available anywhere else (this gives value to the e-book) They have to be designed specifically by you (no posting other people's patterns) Designs must be emailed (or PM) to Travis by Wednesday, November 27st (info below) A few things to keep in mind: Religious and secular designs are accepted. Other religions/traditions also celebrate this time of year, so let's not forget them. Keep detail and size appropriate for an ornament. Don't submit copyrighted or licensed patterns. The due date will sneak up on you quicker than you think. Please get them to me ASAP so I have time to work on them. What do you get in exchange? Credit for your design. The warm fuzzy feeling that you're helping others in need. Submitting your ornaments: Email the ornaments directly to Travis (travis [at] scrollsawvillage.com) or PM me. But since the Holiday season is also about helping others in need, we're continuing our tradition here at Scroll Saw Village as a way to give back. Here is my version of the 3-D Nativity Scene from the Scrollsaw Woodworking & Crafts Winter 2016 (Issue 65) magazine. The original pattern is by Sue Mey and the one in the magazine was cut by our own Rolf. I wanted to modify it somewhat so I could add a battery operated votive candle behind it to "light" up the scene. In order to do that, I added a base to it and added a cutout to the base for the candle to sit in. In hindsight, I would have liked to have found a slightly taller candle to add more "light" higher up behind the halo its self. With my hubby's suggestion as to how best to adhere it all together, I "pegged" the stable to the base and then adhered the scene to the stable with some small pegs behind to set it off slightly from the stable a little more. In order to get the "depth" away from the stable like I wanted, it would have probably been better to have cut two full parts of the scene its self and adhered together for more depth. I didn't so I just cut an additional star when I decided I wanted to have more depth. I considered leaving the star open for the light to shine through and I might if I had a taller candle to help lift the light up there.. Thanks for looking and overlooking the newbie mistakes you may see in my cutting. I was able to get it done and gave it to my mother-in-law in the week before she passed. To her it was a work of art and I hope it brought her some love and peace when she looked at it. I forget which woods I used. Think it was cedar for the stable and baltic birch plywood for the nativity, unsure of the base, it was some scrap hubby had laying around in the shop so could have been most anything.

While this post isn't really qualified for "bragging" (I've seen a lot of your work and y'all qualify to BRAG!), I do hope it's a lesson for other newbies, to the hobby, out there. That lesson being this. Scrolling is not only fun and "therapeutic" in it's own way but a person brand new to it, can make a business out of it. I turned my first scroll saw on, in my entire life, this past October 2016. Now, I'm working feverishly to catch up on Christmas orders but I'm getting there. I have but 25 more to go (to be delivered by Christmas). The bottom line is, if I can do it, ANYONE can!!! MERRY CHRISTMAS folks!! Completed Christmas Orders

Well folks a slight different design to the one on the net real antlers and shaped head and a different leg shape as well. If you want the pattern I have done two jpgs for the legs and antlers to print out correct size and a pdf for the body which can be print in poster style on two pages in PDF software ie Adobe which is free the cut outs are there to show you where they go and not the right size that will depend on what wood thickness you use just offer it up and pencil in the thickness it not an exact science it a proto type you can resize to the bottle you use some have long necks some have thicker and longer bodies so play with the pattern to suit you. Roly PS: I had noticed on the proto that the back legs could come in an inch to make it more stable. deer head.pdf

Well now that I have given out all my scrolled Christmas gifts I feel safe to post pictures of my stuff. I had some issues with one of them where I made a goof up had to get more wood and then found out the pattern had printed smaller then had to get more wood. When I was finally finished the panels I had redone where a slightly different shade and so I had to stain it much darker then I wanted to. In fact I never stain I just use natural danish oil when I finish so I was a little upset but I had no time to try and find the same shade of wood. Work was trying I ended up having to work an entire weekend on a network switch outage and I lost two crucial days and pretty much demanded two comp days of which I was able to get only one day off. But I was able to get everything done in time despite that. I was worried about the oil drying but it did.

Peace plaque from a pattern by BirchBark. Cut from pine with a FDSR no5 and FDSR no3. I had to reduce the pattern to fit an offcut I had available which caused a few problems. Finished size is 23cm wide or roughly 9 inches. Rob

Here is the first piece that I cut with my new scroll saw. Its also the first piece that I did since 2009. Came out pretty nice and will look nice on the wall this Christmas.

I had a spares USB memory stick and thought I'd have a go at making a case for it instructions as follows. 1. Get USB memory stick and measure for piece of wood 2. Get piece of wood in my case light walnut, place usb on it and draw around. 3. Drill and Scrollsaw out hole for usb to fit and sand as necessary. 4. Cut base for case in my case mahogany and glue into place. 5. Cut and sand base to fit side when glue sets. 6. Do NO.4 again but for top piece glue into place and make sure you mark where the lid needs to be cut. 7. You should now have a sealed box so sand to shape. 8. Cut off lid top where you marked it and you have two parts one for lid and one for bottom. 9 Glue in both parts of USB stick I glued lid first waited to dry then put bottom half into lid and push into base and glued. 10. Spray varnish job done this is my first ever with a wood burnt name. Roly

These are mini hugs covered in glitter glue 1" x 1/2" MDF can be made into earings for christmas out of hard work such as oak. I have made them to give away at a party next week so will make a bag full, the more hugs the better. The design is from Gayle at Scrollers Cafe so thanks to her a great designer. Roly

I have had this pattern for sometime,I believe it's from The Winfield Collection.I added another layer to it.I had some minor difficulty cutting it,but it came out pretty good.

I can't take the credit for the design work because the deer is from one design I had a picture of and the rockers from another hand carved deer I saw but modified put together and came up with this for the scrollsaw. And if the designers recognise parts of it then I thank you for the seeds of thought. Roly
