Hey Guys, I have been watching the videos on how to make patterns with GIMP. My question is, is there a size restriction on how big the GIMP program can print? Lets say I want a pattern that in 13"x 30". Will it print out the pattern in sections so you can piece it together? Thanks, Jeremy

Here's a useful and simple to use piece of free software that will allow you to print any of your patterns to any size you choose. It's called BigPrint and only works for Windows computers but works under Wine if you are a Linux user. For example, you create/buy/download a pattern designed to fit on a piece of timber that's 150 mm (6") wide, but you have a neat piece of timber that is only 140 mm (5.5") wide. By inputting your measurements, you can scale the pattern to either enlarge or shrink to fit accordingly. Download from here. The site is safe and Matthias Wandel is a woodworking genius. There is a very easy to follow tutorial over here but if you get stuck, sing out - I use this a lot. The free version will print 'Evaluation' on the final print out but it's easily ignored during cutting. I actually bought the software because I liked using it so much, other than that I have no connection with the site or the software. My main use is for getting plans for a particular sized toy and scaling it up to match the timber I have on hand. Very useful for various sized rocking horses. As a quick example getting sizes from an image: I loaded an image in that had no measurements on so I 'told' BigPrint how big I wanted one of the sides. (Top image) Middle image shows what the image looks like now it has a dimension added. Having told BigPrint the side is 160 mm (6.25") long, I then got it to tell me how big the end piece would be and based on the size entered earlier, it told me the end piece is 117.6 mm (close enough to 4.5") (Bottom image). I know, now, if I have a piece of timber that I can use for this project. I'm still finding my way around this site, so my apologies if this seems to be the wrong place for this post. Trying to follow the gimp lessons. I had to reset all my preferences to start. (Edit - preferences - windows management - reset saved windows positions... - ok - restart). I made it thru a few lessons before things looked too different again. Now I'm at L6 and stuck on brush selection. I docked the brush toolbar, but can't get it to look like the video. At the 6 minute mark Travis talks about 5-pixel brushes, but doesn't show how to find them and I clicked around but didn't see anything. Here's a screen shot. The video is in the middle, my toolbars are in the background on the left. The video shows a brush, and to the right of it is a dot. All I get is a dot. His selection of brushes also looks different from mine. So how do I go from a solid 3px brush to a 5px brush with solid edges? thanks Joe

Apologies in advance if this would be better placed in the pattern making forum but I could use some help with Gimp. I have an image which prints at a perfect size to cut. All I want to do now is to duplicate that image so I can print four or six copies per page rather than one. It sounds simple but is driving me nuts. I think that "layers" may be the solution to my problem but I am struggling to get it to work. I create a new image from an A4 template but when I paste the image into a new layer, it becomes much smaller than the original image. Could anyone offer me any help? Let me know if you need any further information and thanks in advance, Rob
