NASA was restricted in the size of rockets it could us because of the width of the railroad tracks that shipped to the cape. One high powered official authorized a study to find out why that demention was used ,investagators chased it back to the first USA rail construction ,and found that the us hired England finest rail builder to design and train americans to build all of our systems ,So why that demention .well they say thats the way we have always done it , much more exhaustive study in England ,final answer (Thats the way it has always been done )more indepth study revealed .all of Europes were done the same way  for the same reason ,but why More exhaustive study revealed ,The Romans and their chariots were the first means of long distance travel ,and traveled extensively ,causing ruts deep into the earth ,When wagon and carts were built ,they used the same roads connection the existing villages ,in order to stay on the road the wheels were set to the ruts to keep from shaking apart ,When the first rail systems trollies  then trains had to follow the same demention for the same reason, but that still did not answer the original question ,more deeper now of the roman history turns out the wheel on chariots were set wide enough to clear 2 HORSES   AS*SES ,So next time your told I don't BUT thats the way weve always done it ( you can bet there were a couple HORSES AS*SES in there some where !

I have heard and read this a few times. I don't remember the conclusion of any of them.

The horse ending (No pun intended) is a good one.

The railroad tracks would have been wider if the Romans had used the width of the

Quarter Horse butt.

My memory is ,that there is one country that increased that width,But every train that enters or leaves that country must change all the car trucks and engines before proceeding in or out ! Really not a joke! ,kind of like the bank that is to big to fail .
