Kindlyoldpoop Posted January 29, 2009 Report Posted January 29, 2009 Hello All, along with Scroll Sawing I enjoy Wood Carving (in the round) mostly Wood Spirits and other whimsical caricatures along with Welsh love spoons, I am just getting ready to tackle my first relief carving and I am looking forward to it ... ~~KOP~~ Quote
Travis Posted January 29, 2009 Report Posted January 29, 2009 I've always wanted to try carving for real, not just cutting a stick to a point around the campfire. I'd like to get myself a couple good knives, and maybe some hand protection. I think I'm going to try my hand at it this spring. That way I can be on the patio with a beer, bbq, and watching the kids play. Sounds like a great way to pass the time to me! I'd love to see some of your work. Upload a few to your User Gallery. I'm really interested in Welsh Love Spoons. My sister carves them on occasion. They look like fun! Quote
blame Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 i've done carving at times usually thanksgiving no really nothing fancy but i use to carve my own crankbaits that was fun Quote
Travis Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 I've seen people scroll saw crankbaits. In fact, I think one of the magazines had an article on that awhile back. I've also seen some turn them on the lathe. Don't quite know how that works, but somebody figured it out. We don't have bass up here, otherwise I'd give it a try myself. At least I think crankbaits are for bass. I've been itching to do a little fishing lately. But until I figure out how to scroll saw a fly, I think the two hobbies will remain separate. Quote
blame Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 fishing was another one of those obsession hobbies for me, from the time i was 12 till 3 or 4 years ago from the end of march till december every weekend i was fishing mainly bass, walleye, crappie , and carp acouple of times i went for musky. i replicated every type of bait. minnows ,jointed minnows, shallow crankbaits to deep divers that would dive to 40+ feet , suspended minnows, even did the rebel frog crank getting that one to work was a fun ordeal topwaters like poppers skitters, hard twitch baits and spooks. all in all i made over 240 of them learned alot about sharping my knives, sanding and painting whiling doing it sorry to hijack the thread kinda just went on a stroll down memory lane Quote
Handi Posted January 31, 2009 Report Posted January 31, 2009 I've always wanted to try my Hand at Carving also... I keep my eye on a few Carving blogs on blogger, and these guys do pretty good job... one of them is Carving by hand and the other carvs by electric tools.. The one that uses electric tools, Carves Boxes and Toilet Seats. The other one carves Little Statues of Ole Western Fellows... If Travis don't mind, and everyone is interested, I will feature their links here for everyone to review. These are the guys that helped me become more interested in both worlds of carving. Quote
Christina Posted January 31, 2009 Report Posted January 31, 2009 When I was a kid, I used to carve marionettes..............I guess that would be kinda like carving caricatures. But I basically just carved heads, hands and feet lolol. I've also carved a couple of those little spiral/ice sickle santa ornaments. I always wanted to carve meersham pipes..............I've always been fasinated with them. But never really had the opportunity to try. And I don't know anyone, anymore, that smokes a pipe. So I don't know what in the world I would do with them if I did lolol. My mom is a self taught carver in Maine. She has her stuff in several galleries in Maine and in New Hampsire. She carves a bit of everything but mostly birds. She does the most impressive, life sized birds of prey............eagles and hawks mostly. She carves each feather individually and uses an airbrush to bring them to life. She always puts them in a setting that is like their natural environment too.............awesome work. She did a lifesize cigar store indian too. She used to teach carving at Wasilla Community College in Alaska and now has private classes in her own workshop. I have pictures somewhere.....I'll have to try to find them and share. Here are some of the pictures I found... carving 4 front view carving 4 side view carvings 3 Work In Progress And finally............My mom and her dog "Little Man".........check out the ribbons behind her! Handi..............that's a terrific idea. I would love to see some of their work. I LOVE seeing the goodies!!! Christina Quote
Handi Posted January 31, 2009 Report Posted January 31, 2009 The Midnight Carver http://themidnightcarver.blogspot.com/ Out West Wood Carving http://outwestwoodcarving.blogspot.com/ These are the 2 Sites that I keep Track of, I'm impressed with both of their work... Quote
Travis Posted February 1, 2009 Report Posted February 1, 2009 I always wanted to carve meersham pipes..............I've always been fasinated with them. But never really had the opportunity to try. And I don't know anyone, anymore, that smokes a pipe. So I don't know what in the world I would do with them if I did lolol.... I've always wanted to carve a regular pipe made of burl or something. You can buy pipe blanks on ebay which is nothing more than a log with a stem in it...LOL. I'd like to try my hand at a couple of simple things, but eventually carve my own pipe. If it turns out well, I'll even buy tobacco for it! I'm usually a cigar smoker. When I say I smoke cigars, I mean I smoke maybe 3 or 4 a year, during the summer months...LOL. But I think it would be fun to smoke a pipe that I made myself. Your mom does beautiful work, BTW. Those birds are amazing! @Handi Thanks for the links, Handi. I'll have to keep an eye on them. The character artist is awesome! Quote
Christina Posted February 1, 2009 Report Posted February 1, 2009 Handi those links are amazing.........thanks so much for sharing them with us. I love those seats! Especially the tiger...........I can see why he sells those so often! His boxes are pretty amazing too. Thanks Travis. My mom is in her 70's and you'd think she was 30 as busy as she stays. I think she's just awesome! I know you can buy the blanks on ebay......thanks. I use ebay quite a bit and get loads of bargains! Especially on my scrolling wood lol. I might just have to try it one of these days. I like the look of the old meersham pipes.........you know the ones that are carved to look like a whaling ship or a sea captain..........maybe a mermaid. Really cool stuff! Someday lololol... Christina Quote
Handi Posted February 1, 2009 Report Posted February 1, 2009 Christina: From Ethans Blog, he just started doing the Boxes.. he just got a Cheaper Model Tablesaw to cut Straignt lines with lol, so he could make boxes... His first attempt was on a Scroll Saw to make a few But joints, and he found out quicly that a Scroll Saw wasn't that good for making boxes lol Quote
Christina Posted February 1, 2009 Report Posted February 1, 2009 LOL nope it isn't...........been there done that. But I figured it was just me lololol. Thanks again. Christina Quote
wood carver Posted February 6, 2009 Report Posted February 6, 2009 I've always wanted to try carving for real, not just cutting a stick to a point around the campfire. I'm really interested in Welsh Love Spoons. My sister carves them on occasion. They look like fun! I've been carving for over 20 years and I can tell you that the absolutely best knives that I've ever found are DENNY KNIVES......you can get them from The Woodcraft Shop in Bettendorf, Iowa. I'm in no way working for the Woodcraft Shop...just a customer....in fact these folks are very trusting, after you've once ordered from them and have established that you are an honest person, they will allow you to call your next order in to them, and pay AFTER you've received your order in the mail.....not many companies will do that. Quote
Travis Posted February 6, 2009 Report Posted February 6, 2009 Thanks for the suggestion. I'll have to look into them. I didn't see that the regular Woodcraft store online sells them. Looks like they mostly offer Flexcut and Pfeil knives. For those interested, you can find more info on Denny Knives here. Quote
