I want to create a pattern in inkscape that has the text in a spiral similar to the one in the spring edition of Scrollsaw woodworking magazine.  I wrote to the author to see if perhaps he'd used inkscape but he hadn't.

Are there any tutorials out there that demo this  or do you guys have any thoughts.  I've attached a pic of what im talking about.

Hello Terry, I just played around with Inkscape and I managed to put text on a spiral!

1 Type in Capitals:THE BROWN COW JUMPED OVER THE MOON it's text.

2 Click on the left tool bar for the Spiral, Create your spiral of a decent size, Then

   convert it to a "Path"

3 Select your text and spiral, Then on the tool bar at the top select "Text" and click

on "Text to Path" and low and behold your Text has attached it's self to your Spiral.

O.K. Terry,

Bob ;)

Hi Bob/Terry:

Curiosity got the best of me on this one.

I tried it, and this is what I came up with.

I know it's not ready to be cut but I just wanted to try it

to see what the outcome would be.

I just wrote the saying over and over - I think it was 5 times, maybe 6

then just put text on path.

A little more time and it would be ready to cut.

Thanks Bob for the quick tutorial

Thanks Terry for asking about it.

Hey Paul Fab4, You nailed it! You did it better than me

Bob  ;)

Hi Bob:

Thanks but:

I doubt that very much.

I followed what you wrote and this is the end result

I would have gotten nowhere, otherwise.

Thanks Gordie, appreciate the reply

Thanks Guys,   And Fab4 I tried that site you mentioned and it works about the same as inkscape, just fewer options.  The problem now is  how to get the letters in the spiral to touch the ones above so that it can be cut out.  I think I'll have to make each letter an object then move them to the spiral manually.   Still working it.

Hi Terry:

After reading your post I went back to Inkscape to play

When you click on the spiral, change the number where it says Turns

keep an eye on the spiral. The letters will eventually touch.

Then you can turn the letters to objects and you will have what you want.

Path - object to path - ungroup - Path - Union (as a reminder)

You may have to play around with the spacing(kerning) to get the letters to line up properly

Keep me posted as to how you are doing

Thanks

Fab4

Forgot to say

The way you mention above would work too

very COOL Fab4.  Perfect.  Just have to arrange the words backwards so it spirals from the outside in.  Inkscape is so cool (and price is right).  Going to now mess around with kerning to see if I can actually do this.

To get the letters the correct direction, 10 draw the spiral 2) flip the spiral horizontal  3) Reverse the path, to do this convert the spiral to a path(PATH- Object to Path) and than reverse the nodes by reversing the path (PATH-reverse) 4)Put the text on the path. You will have to adjust the spiral for teh length of the text and adjust the text and kerning appropraitely. I'm working on the lyrics for AMAZING GRACE. Hope this helps.
