Christina Posted January 31, 2009 Report Posted January 31, 2009 I've been woodburning since I was 12.........I am self taught and have my own methods lololol. Does anyone else do woodburning? I like to burn on pine...........most people don't. I also love using regular carbon paper to transfer the image to the wood............most people don't. First I like pine because of the beautiful grain and softness of it. It also has alot of pitch so you never are sure how dark or light you will get a burn to be. I love the carbon paper for the same reason...............the unpredictableness (is that a word? lol). The carbon marks have a tendency to flare..........or catch fire quickly............it's just tiny quick flares and sometimes this really enhances the work. I like not knowing what to expect all the time..........this is one area I don't always have to be in control of! I've got several pictures that I will find and share later........it's my hubby's birthday and he's chomping at the bit to go to his birthday dinner. I'm taking him for mexican food. How about you? Travis Posted February 1, 2009 Report Posted February 1, 2009 I tried it when I was a kid with just a soldering iron. It was fun. I'm not sure that if it was because I wanted a creative outlet (which I always do), or the fact I was a pyro! Probably the latter. I'm actually interested in using a wood burner to put details into some of my toys and games that I make. I saw somebody do that and it really looked cool! I have a wood burning set from Michaels with a several nibs. I haven't tried it out yet. Maybe when the weather warms up a bit. That's something I'd rather do outside. Quote
Christina Posted February 1, 2009 Author Report Posted February 1, 2009 I use the cheapy from Walmart.........$11. I only use two of the nibs really. Someday, if I ever get rich and famous , I'd like to buy one of the professional models. But that's never going to happen! Those are way too expensive for my pocket book! Here are some of my burnings...........most are really crappy pictures though. I didn't have a digital camera and used my scanner lololol.............hey it worked for the most part! These are some memorial plaques that I made for my husband's family members after my father in laws death last year. I made a total of 15 different ones.............but didn't take pictures of them all. Here are the three I can find. Patterns by me, Rev Scott and Honey. This is my Rottweiller Buddy (from my own drawing)..........aka Fuddy Duddy, a funky dragon I found on the net, and roses with a butterfly, pattern by Papasal. This one is a pattern of the End of the Trail Clock I made for my husband. It is a pine plaque burned, and then inlayed with my own crushed stone technique..........kind of like inlayed turquoise jewelry........in this case it is turquoise. I had to remove the clock works to scan it. This is a purchased wooden tray that I burned a celtic knot pattern, by Steviegwood, on the inside......colored with cheap colored pencils (as most of my work is done) and then the other picture is the end.......a butterfly pattern by me. The second is a plaque with wild roses and a butterfly..........pattern by me. It has terrible glare from the finish......sorry. I did this tray and the wild rose and butterfly plaque to raffle off to benefit a couple whose baby would die soon after it was born. Christina Quote
Christina Posted February 1, 2009 Author Report Posted February 1, 2009 These last two are my most favorite burnings that I have ever done. This tiger picture I used was amazing........it was a night time photo and so is a dark burning. But the colors were really awesome...........and I carried them through to this burning although you can't really tell from this crappy scan. There are blues and purples and reds and oranges... It was supposed to be a gift for my mom and I couldn't let go of it lolololol......I still have it! The second is a really cute picture of a Lynx with a mouse on his head.............a drawing I found on the net that I got permission to use. I call it "Best Buds". Christina Quote
Fran Posted February 1, 2009 Report Posted February 1, 2009 Christina, Such beautiful work. I really like the flowers and butterflies. The last thing I tried woodburning on was trying to put viening on a butterfly's wing. Almost burned a hole in it. Think I will stick to the saw. Fran Quote
blame Posted February 1, 2009 Report Posted February 1, 2009 very nice work Christina i really like the butterfly and rose the color is awesome you did a great job! would you be interested in parting with it? Quote
Christina Posted February 1, 2009 Author Report Posted February 1, 2009 Thanks so much Fran..............the best way to do the tiny little lines is by using the script tip......it's a very tiny round tip.............and I built a dimmer switch box to plug my burners in to so I can control the heat......so you can get lighter or darker as you please............it's pretty simple to do. I just used an lamp kit.............and a dimmer switch............a plug in plate and a wall box.........put it all together and you have a great controller........can't remember what it's actually called lol. But to buy one is really expensive and you can make one for like a quarter of the price! I made mine originally for stained glass work. Blame, thanks so much. Sure...........I had originally done the wild rose for a raffle for a couple whose baby was going to die soon after it was born..........to help with medical and burial costs. But I never heard back from them. Just email me. I still have the other rose and butterfly if that's what you're talking about...........I just thought about it.......which are you talking about? Christina Quote
Travis Posted February 2, 2009 Report Posted February 2, 2009 Those are beautiful! Nicely done. I really like the memorial plaques and the Butterfly and Roses is outstanding. It would be hard to let any of those go. Good job! Quote
Christina Posted February 2, 2009 Author Report Posted February 2, 2009 Thanks very much for the kind words Travis. I mostly only make them as gifts anymore........you can only stack so many up lol. I am out of wall space...........most of the paintings I have hanging are by my mom...........go figure! I used to sell them online years ago..........then my computer crashed and I couldn't get another for a couple years and just never did start another website for them. I also sold them at a local cafe in Amarillo, TX and did custom orders like portraits. By the way.......outside is a good place to do woodburning.........the fumes can be very toxic. I have asthma so I have to be very careful what kinds of wood I use. And since I really can't cut my own plaques anyway I just use purchased ones. I don't own a router yet and I like the edges to look nice. Christina Quote
AirNationalGuardMom Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 Beautiful job on all of them Christina. Linda Quote

Dave M Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 Christina I missed this posting before you did some great work there. Are you on any of the groups with Yahoo or any where else? I know Nedra Denison would be scolding you for using the carbon paper. She pushes graphite paper. She has a group on Yahoo that Frieke and I are members of, if you'd like I can get you a link to the group. They have amazing artists there, like ours here. Again great work here. Dave Quote
