I made two 50" tall  quilt display racks today.  I made them of eastern red cedar.  I cut the  heart shape with my 15" jet scroll saw but the rest using my table saw, planer, router, and sander.  Material is 3/4" and 3/8" cedar.  Glued and nailed together and screwed to the 16"x8" base.  Lots of quilt makers here in Lubbock.post-2247-0-36235100-1445632222_thumb.jpgpost-2247-0-55309400-1445632238_thumb.jpg

18" would be about right in my opinion.  I made my base 8" x 18".  I was copying one that was in a sewing store here.  I made mine a little more sturdy than the one I saw in the store.

I suggest you look in a store at book stands like the one you want to make or do an on line search and get dimensions from that.

It never occured to me to cut it with a router.

Controlling a router freehand, like I use the scroll saw, is not a skill I have.

I did use a  table mounted router to round off all the edges after cutting the shape though.

Jim, it's easy to see why they would be good sellers. I've had this pattern for years, but, I've only ever made three of these stands. Seeing this one done in cedar, makes me think that I should make a few more.
