Jim Finn Posted October 23, 2015 Report Posted October 23, 2015 I made two 50" tall quilt display racks today. I made them of eastern red cedar. I cut the heart shape with my 15" jet scroll saw but the rest using my table saw, planer, router, and sander. Material is 3/4" and 3/8" cedar. Glued and nailed together and screwed to the 16"x8" base. Lots of quilt makers here in Lubbock. LarryEA and Lucky2 2 Quote
amazingkevin Posted October 24, 2015 Report Posted October 24, 2015 Jim , i need to make a book stand like this, but i need to make it last from abuse this must be sturdy to handle the weight of quilts .Mine needs to be 36" tall with a 17" x 12 " book shelve on tip,I'm not sure what size the base should be ? help help.I was thinking of a round base 18"?over kill?Yours look good Quote
Jim Finn Posted October 24, 2015 Author Report Posted October 24, 2015 18" would be about right in my opinion. I made my base 8" x 18". I was copying one that was in a sewing store here. I made mine a little more sturdy than the one I saw in the store. I suggest you look in a store at book stands like the one you want to make or do an on line search and get dimensions from that. oldhudson Posted October 25, 2015 Report Posted October 25, 2015 Very nice. Love cedar. Was there a reason you cut the hearts with the scroll saw vs using the router? Just curious Quote
Jim Finn Posted October 25, 2015 Author Report Posted October 25, 2015 It never occured to me to cut it with a router. Controlling a router freehand, like I use the scroll saw, is not a skill I have. I did use a table mounted router to round off all the edges after cutting the shape though. Quote

Jim Finn Posted November 18, 2015 Author Report Posted November 18, 2015 update: I made and sold two more of these. Lucky2 1 Quote
Lucky2 Posted November 18, 2015 Report Posted November 18, 2015 Jim, it's easy to see why they would be good sellers. I've had this pattern for years, but, I've only ever made three of these stands. Seeing this one done in cedar, makes me think that I should make a few more. Len Quote
kywoodmaster Posted November 19, 2015 Report Posted November 19, 2015 Those look great. I can see why they have been selling. Excellent work and the cedar don't hurt any either. Quote
