Am slowly, through trial & error, trying to put together a cheat sheet "Inkscape Word Art for Dummies" as a group project.  Here are my today's questions.  I'm using "Inches" in Page Setup.  Am working with large words on the screen.

1.  When and how do I size the large word to print the size of the end product I want?

2.  Same as above, but for the Dynamic Offset word and the "bottom word" that will end up as part of the pattern?

3.  When and how do I size the rectangle, that will be the finished size of the piece?  Also, I can create convex corners. per previous answer by one of you.  How can I make CONCAVE corners.

That's all for today.  Rest assured more to follow.  Please be aware that I need to read The Operators Manual each time I want to make toast.

Once you do the cutout then select both words then path then union. This will join them as one.

I am guessing this is what you want to do. Make a rectangle the size you want. Make a circle and duplicate it. Move duplicate to corner of rectangle you want to cut out, just put like 1/4 of the circle overlapping the rectangle corner. Select circle press and hold SHIFT select rectangle then release shift go to path difference it will cut it out. Duplicate original circle and repeat on the other three corners. Then you can move and resize your word on the rectangle. If you want after you place it you can select both and then path and union to make them one object. Hope this helps.

I'd work on your design the exact size you intend it to be (or at least close to it).  That way it's easier to judge the sizes of bridges and details.

To resize, select your item.  At the top of the screen, you should be able to type in your dimensions.  For inches, select "In" is selected in the pulldown on the right next to the height

I think you're asking how to measure the dynamic offset?  You can create a little box that is a certain size (.25"x.25") and use that as a gauge.  Just expand so the size of my dynamic offset matches the gauge. I do that a lot.

I create circles to act like a cookie cutter.

  1. Create your rectangle.
  2. Create a circle that is the size of you concave
  3. Duplicate the circle and put it on all 4 corners.
  4. Select the box and circle and then choose Path>Difference

Amazingscroller:  Did you also copy when you were in school?  JUST KIDDING FRIEND!!

FYI:  I've gotten most of the way towards the goal of learning how to make intersecting word art.  At the same time, I am working on a Cheat Sheet geared towards a kindergarten learning level.  The above comments are already included.

As we all know, if you were to drive from California to New York, there are different paths you can take to arrive at the same destination.  Over time, by asking the nice people on this site for help, it taught me that Inscape is the same.  Therefore I had to pick and choose which method I wanted to include.  In this particular set of questions, I happened to include FALCON'S method.  At other times, I used someone else's.  Good or bad, asking here is like being a judge at a talent question.  Which outstanding talented person's suggestion do I pick for this set of questions.  THE LAST thing I want to do is have someone feel snubbed that I didn't choose their great suggestion for this round.  That's the hard part for me.

Some day when I have everything working, I will submit a "first draft" to be critiqued and suggestion for changes to be made.  The final cheat sheet will be A GROUP EFFORT. In the meantime, be aware that if there were a race between me and 1 snail, I would come in 3rd.

I am a computer dummy, I get confused on the steps in order, and I watch the videos and still get confused, it would be nice if someone would take the time and do a written version, just like photo shop, and I think it would help other people also.  Just a thought.  edward
