Jim Finn Posted December 6, 2015 Report Posted December 6, 2015 I make and sell cedar boxes with images inlaid into the hinged lids and today I sold thirty-five of them! My average, at the twenty five or so sales I attend, is only about twelve and my best this year was thirty-nine. My next scheduled sale is in Mid June 2016. I also make and sell intarsia, toys and wall hung items like crosses and 38" stars but boxes are my best seller. jbrowning, oneleggimp and Lucky2 3 Quote

spirithorse Posted December 6, 2015 Report Posted December 6, 2015 That's fantastic news, Jim, I'd hate the thought of having to make that much inventory and then wondering which ones might sell. Congratulations and my wishes for your continued success. We all know your workmanship should make the sales come easy!God Bless! Spirithorse oneleggimp 1 Quote

Phantom Scroller Posted December 6, 2015 Report Posted December 6, 2015 Jim what's your average price for one of those that's a lot of work. Roly Quote
Jim Finn Posted December 6, 2015 Author Report Posted December 6, 2015 I sell all of my boxes for $20 no matter the complexity, wood involved, size, cash or credit. All the same price lets me know what folks realy want and they are not influenced by price differences. I want to make what folks want so I can make even more in the future. Everything I make, sells.....eventually. I rarely throw anything away and I do not put anything on "sale" to get rid of it. Two of the boxes I sold recently I have had in stock for over a year. I will not make any more of those. I still have an inventory of over 200 boxes. I sell about 300 a year so I only need to make about 100 this winter,..... starting today. If I relax and take my time I make ten boxes a week. Ten weeks of fun. A few years ago I did not have much inventory but had a sale every Saturday so I was making twenty boxes a week, to keep up, for part of the summer. Took me over forty hours to do that though. Too much fun in one week for this old man. Phantom Scroller and Lucky2 2 Quote

Malcolm161 Posted January 16, 2016 Report Posted January 16, 2016 (edited) Hi Jim, that's fantastic work you do, I like the range you show in your gallery and I love the inlays. Do you use a Router and if you do, what size is it. I have been making boxes for the last 2 years since starting woodwork after retirement and had been thinking of adding some inlay work, although I have not done any. I was thinking of a small Dremel type router, more in line with what Lutherions use, as they look to be a better size to manage on boxes. Jim Finn Posted January 16, 2016 Author Report Posted January 16, 2016 (edited) Malcom. No I do not use a router. I use only a scroll saw to do what is called "double bevel inlay" I have posted information on how to do it and if you do a search you will find it. It is done by stacking the two woods that are the same thickness and cutting the image on both at the same time with the scroll saw table tilted less than 3°. Most inlays only take me 3-6 minutes to cut this way. You can email me for more information, if you like, at Jimtfinn@aol.com http://www.scrollsawvillage.com/topic/15518-making-simple-boxes-with-inlay-in-lid/ Edited January 16, 2016 by Jim Finn Quote

Malcolm161 Posted January 16, 2016 Report Posted January 16, 2016 (edited) Thanks Jim, that's a brilliant idea and I can see how it takes less time than inlays, 'as such'. I have made a note of that for the future, adding to my learning curve. . Malcolm Edited January 16, 2016 by Malcolm161 Quote
