woodknots Posted January 13, 2016 Report Posted January 13, 2016 Can anyone recommend which model is the best. Will be using it for lite carving and mainly sanding want one that the flex shaft will work on. Thanks Jeff Quote
Dan Posted January 13, 2016 Report Posted January 13, 2016 I don't have a recommendation but I can share my preference. My Dremel died after 25 years of abuse. When I replace it I will get one that is cordless, for convenience, and variable speed. I think most will accept the flex shaft. woodknots 1 Quote
LarryEA Posted January 14, 2016 Report Posted January 14, 2016 Ask Dremel. They have been very cooperative when I have a question. woodknots 1 Quote

Lucky2 Posted January 14, 2016 Report Posted January 14, 2016 Jeff, if your buying an actual Dremel compared to a generic brand, you can purchase their base model. It will do all that you need it to, and then some. You can add to it by buying the extra implements, and it will work with the flexible wand. You should buy the corded model in my opinion, not all of the extra gizmos will work on the cordless model. I don't think you can use the flex shaft, on the cordless model but, I'm not sure. So that's something to look into before buying one, and if you check around you can get a good buy on a package deal. Len woodknots 1 Quote
Clayton717 Posted January 15, 2016 Report Posted January 15, 2016 I have three of the 3000 series models. they are variable speed. I use them a lot for shaping and sanding on my intarsia. each one has a different bit in it with the flex shaft. I have never had a problem with them and they get lots of use. woodknots 1 Quote
Malcolm161 Posted January 15, 2016 Report Posted January 15, 2016 (edited) I have been looking at these recently and there have been lots of bad reports and only a few good ones. The cordless dont seem to have the lasting power. The 4000 seems to be the best of the bunch, but several past ownerd say that the Proxxon has better motor and is more reliable. Only a little more expensive. I want one to try out intarsia and save on the edges, but having only been woodworking 2 yearsduring retirement, I have only made bandsaw boxes so far. Jim Finn Posted January 16, 2016 Report Posted January 16, 2016 I use a "Mastercarver" tool that I prefer over a hand held rotary tool. When I did use hand held rotary tools I much preferred a Black and decker ($28) over the Dremel. It is three speed and hs more power at lower speeds than does the variable speed corded Dremel. woodknots 1 Quote
Bpardue Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 I have 2 - one is cordless but don't use it as much and I have a 3000 series model. Both have flex shafts. I use them both for shaping intarsia. The cordless does not seem to have the power as the corded one does. I get about two hours on a charge. Want I don't like is i only have 1 battery for the cordless. woodknots 1 Quote
