Was there mid summer 20 years ago. The mosquitos can lift an average sized human being.

We flew both ways and rented a motorhome there. Would go that way again.

Brother & wife and widowed sister took a cruise there last year. They were underwhelmed with the ship accommodations.

Dan is right, bugs in September are not bad.  We spend May thru August on the Kenai, late May and June are the worst.

Terry, did you go to Katmai National Park to see the grizzlies feast on salmon?

Dan, never have been to Katmai.  Don't lack bear experience, though.  In a tent at Byers lake up towards Denali on the under-construction Parks Hwy (1975) and wife nedges me and says there is a bear.  Open the bottom of the tent flap a bit to look and this thing is standing next to the picnic table and is taller than the table at the shoulder.  Told her it was just a little one, go to sleep.  She did, I did not.

Camped and canoed in Northern Canada in earky July. It was black fly and mosquito hatch time.

Black flies during the day, mosquitos at night. A friends eyelids swelled up so bad he had a problem seeing.

Considering this, they could kill you.

But then we were in the wild country.

Twenty feet off shore, there were no bugs.

There is a difference to Alaskan critters, things like mosquitos you can HEAR coming and at night they have landing lights!  :D  Just kidding, that time of year it is really pleasant.  The thing that always surprises us is how WARM it is.  Anchorage is 80-ish during the whole of the daylight hours (all 24 of them)!  You'll love it, and it really is bigger than Texas!  Russ

Back then there was a storytrller on the radio.  He had a story about a fellow that wanted to climb a steep mountian, so he went in june and waited for the skeeters to attack, and benr their stingers under on his shoulders, then just waved his hads and when they all tried to fly away he got a lif to the top of the mountain.  His version was better than mine, but you get the idea.
