Dan Posted April 17, 2016 Report Posted April 17, 2016 (edited) I and my wife went for a walk yesterday and came across this oak burl. If that tree ever comes down that puppy is mine. Edited April 17, 2016 by Dan WayneMahler, Scrolling Steve, amazingkevin and 1 other 4 Quote

LarryEA Posted April 17, 2016 Report Posted April 17, 2016 Quite a nice burl. * You need a truck to haul it. * A decade to dry it. but it will be uniquely beauitful. Quote
Honeycow Posted April 17, 2016 Report Posted April 17, 2016 Our neighbor had a huge burl sitting outside for a long time. I asked him one day what he was going to do with it. He said he had no plans, as he just thought it was cool. He gave it to me! I went over with a trailer and he had to load it with his backhoe, and it wasn't easy! I brought it back to the farm and put it in our sawdust building (we use sawdust to bed our animals with) because I knew it would dry nicely there. My honey wasn't to thrilled to help me unload it and find a place out of the way for it, but he knows by now that when it comes to wood there is no discussion to be had. Well, it dried up very very well. Too well in fact! I showed it to the old timer that hangs around the farm and owns the sawmill that he lets me use. He took out his jackknife and started poking around with it. Sad ending here folks. The whole thing was punky. He could easily have tunneled right through it with his knife. It obviously was so very heavy because it was saturated with water because it was rotting. I was very disappointed! I still have it and when the mill comes back here I'm going to slice it anyway to see if there is any good parts of it. Anyway, Dan, I hope you keep it under cover, high and dry when you get it! WayneMahler Posted April 17, 2016 Report Posted April 17, 2016 Dan Old time crosscut saws are very quiet and fast if sharpened properly. Not telling you what or how to do it. Just an open thought Seriously I would mark that in my gps and keep an eye on it. Then hoped I lived long enough to wait it out. Quote
Dan Posted April 17, 2016 Author Report Posted April 17, 2016 Great ideas guys. I love the crosscut saw idea. The only problem is...it's in a county park, the one I work for. I plan to do a rain dance and maybe stir up some lightning that will strike the tree. Otherwise, the tree will surely out-live me. Jerry, I think she is almost blind. If she could see better I may be in trouble. Jim McDonald 1 Quote
