I've finally cut all the parts, finished them and started the 1st phase of assembly. It's at this point where the clock is suppose to be working. Well, notice I said suppose to be working. Mine isn't. The problem is the escape lever is not releasing the escape wheel when I start the pendulum. So are there any suggestions out there? (Kdog, Rolf, Old Hudson, Scrappile, ?) I'm thinking the escape lever flats are too long or the points on the escape wheel are too high?  Any suggestions would be helpful. And no, using it for designer firewood will not be accepted as a suggestion.  Hood ornament, yes, designer firewood, no. (Big smile)

This has been a very fun project and I'll keep plugging away at it.

Sorry Gonzo, but not having it here right in front of me, it's hard to tell the problem. I've built 5 different wooden gear clocks and after many hours, got 3 of them to work. The other 2 run for a couple of minutes, then stop. Just gotta keep adjusting, and playing with them.

These Images may help Brian law is an excellent designer. The images were from his web site. It gives you an idea as to what needs to be tweaked. Like Kdog said hard to help from a distance.

Looking good.

the pattern maker is very willing to give you help and tips. His name and address can be found in the assembly book. If you can not find it, ask Scrappile, he has the assembly book and should be able to forward you that information

Jeff the pattern maker has been WONDERFUL helping me.  I can email him and he replies very quickly.  Even on weekends.

I think I may have found my problem. The center hole on all the gears are off square by about 7 degrees. Awhile back I was making some scrollsaw bowls. I tilted the table on my drill press whatever degree the directions suggested. Well, I never squared the table back up. What a numbskull I am! And I'm hoping that's my problem  if it's not, I have one heck of a hood ornament  Big smile

So I get to remake all the gears.  No big deal. I have all the time in the world to finish it.  However, all my other projects have been put to the side. Oh well.

It still has been a lot of fun and very challenging. I have never done anything like this in my shop. It's given me a whole new appreciation for how they made things years and years ago.

Instead of re-cutting all of the gears How about drilling a larger hole and gluing in an insert with the correct hole in the center.

Do the gears wobble? 7 deg is a lot.

Oh yeah, they wobble big time. I don't know why it took me so long to notice it. What's the saying, There are none so blind as those who cannot see.  As for plugging and redrill in the holes! Jeff the designer of the clock suggested the same thing. All the gears have been re-made with the exception of the great wheel.

understanding the problem is most of the work,,if you do not discover why the problem exists, it just becomes frustrating and unsolvable. so at least you know you are now under way and should soon have your clock ticking all night, keeping you awake..
