saje Posted August 5, 2017 Report Posted August 5, 2017 In late 2009 I purchased a DeWalt *I/H* DW788 20" Scroll Saw with Stand & Light. I never opened the box ... it still has the plastic wrapping around it. I have kept it in my garage (2 different garages) for the past 8 years. I will unfortunately never use it now & would like to sell it on Craigslist or perhaps on eBay. My concern is that since it has been unopened all these years & stored in garages (on top of a table, never directly on the floor), will it still be in excellent shape after sitting all this time? I do not want to sell someone an item that might be damaged. The garages were/are not air conditioned or heated. Temps inside on summer days could at times have been in the 90s. On winter evenings the temps have rarely reached below 30 degrees. Dampness has not been an issue. Thank you for your help. Quote
Dan Posted August 5, 2017 Report Posted August 5, 2017 It probably is in decent condition as long as it hasn't gotten wet. I would open the box to be sure there's no rust and to take some pictures to post. If I were a bit closer I'd be glad to look at it or even make an offer. Quote
Scrappile Posted August 5, 2017 Report Posted August 5, 2017 Saje, welcome to the Village. For what it is worth I invited Saje here from another forum because he wants to sell this saw. I figured there is a much bigger audience here than on the other forum and he would have a better chance of finding someone interested within driving distance that may want to look at and maybe purchase the saw. I personally think the saw will be in new shape. But if some one in Kentucky or close that wants a saw or a back up saw, Maybe message Saje and arrange a meet, it might work out to be beneficial to both. Or maybe someone will find out they are close enough to Saje to meet and give advice to the condition and value of the saw. Lucky2 1 Quote
amazingkevin Posted August 6, 2017 Report Posted August 6, 2017 I don't need a dozen DW788's other wise ,Maybe,lol Quote
saje Posted August 8, 2017 Author Report Posted August 8, 2017 (edited) Thanks everyone! I'm a she, by the way : ) I will get out into the garage & clear things away from the saw as soon as I can to open the box to check for rust. It definitely hasn't gotten wet all these years. I never considered rust ... I was more worried about any oil or grease thickening or something like that. Is that something I should be concerned about? Some sort of damage to the motor? I live in northern Kentucky ... about 16 miles south of Cincinnati ... so hopefully there is at least one person in the area who would be interested in the saw. Despite the fact that I haven't done any woodworking for 9 years, it's a part of my life that I will miss. Edited August 8, 2017 by saje OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Scrappile Posted August 8, 2017 Report Posted August 8, 2017 Saje, I would have thought you would have gotten more response to your thread here. Fact, I thought you would have had offers from people close to your location that would want to look it over and maybe purchase. The DeWalt is a very popular saw. Open the box, look it over and if possible plug it in and listen to it. Maybe run it at the slowest speed first, let the bearing grease work a little. Or don't run it let the new owner check out the running. I'm betting it is fine. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Lucky2 Posted August 11, 2017 Report Posted August 11, 2017 Saje, the saw should be as good as new, I doubt that it has any issues. Do you know if it's a number 1 or a number 2, knowing that might make a difference in the price you can get for it. Len OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Scrappile Posted August 11, 2017 Report Posted August 11, 2017 Saje it will tell on the label on the motor. Which means you have to open the box. .... OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Bill WIlson Posted August 11, 2017 Report Posted August 11, 2017 I agree that it is likely the saw is as good as new. If purchased new in 2009, I would expect it to be a Type 2. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Fish Posted August 11, 2017 Report Posted August 11, 2017 I don't think there would be anything wrong with it either. I'd love to buy it but can't afford it. Good luck. It will sell. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
saje Posted August 13, 2017 Author Report Posted August 13, 2017 Thank you all : ) I would really rather not remove the plastic & open the box. Perhaps I can advertise it as being purchased in 2009 with the box still sealed & this will tell anyone looking for this type of saw what they need to know? If they wish to open the box when they get here, that will be understandable. I see this saw is now going for $500.00 ... at least on the site where I purchased it. What would be a fair asking price? dgman Posted August 14, 2017 Report Posted August 14, 2017 Because it is no longer under warranty, I would not consider buying it unseen and untried. The going price of a used DeWalt saw is about $200- $250. amazingkevin and OCtoolguy 2 Quote

Scrappile Posted August 15, 2017 Report Posted August 15, 2017 I see a lot of DeWalts that are used for $300, $350 and up. Do they get it ? I do not know but I would not rush to $200 to $250 for it. Just my opinion.... OCtoolguy and amazingkevin 2 Quote
