Mark SW Posted August 21, 2017 Report Posted August 21, 2017 To all the talented pattern designers here and there are a gaggle full. For the most basic of patterns which is better Gimp or Inkscape? I cut fretwork and would like to try my luck at making some of my own patterns, Either by free modified clipart or what ever rattles around in my gray matter. Just birds, animals both wild and domestic a few landscape is what I would like to try. And convert some photos of are camping trips and my best friend Sydney. Thank you very much. Mark Quote
jollyred Posted August 22, 2017 Report Posted August 22, 2017 To me, Gimp and other raster image programs are more for the "portrait" type of patterns. Inkscape and other vector programs are for fretwork and word art patterns. I also use a CAD program for fretwork patterns that are strongly geometric. Both can do basic patterns, but which to use is very much a matter of preference. Start with one of them, learn it, then get the other and learn to use it. You will find which you like for a particular pattern. The tutorials on this site are an excellent place to begin. Tom Wilson Mark SW 1 Quote

bobscroll Posted August 22, 2017 Report Posted August 22, 2017 Hi Tom, I think starting with Inkscape would be o.k., You can do a lot with that program, I've been using it for some time, And am still learning new things about it! There is a forum on the official site to get help from as well as here with the great tutorials that Travis has done for us. And has been said above Gimp is good for portraits, Get them both and play with them, Bob Quote
