jbrowning Posted October 13, 2017 Report Posted October 13, 2017 Does anyone one here do wood whittlin'? I'm thinking I might want to give that a try. So then when it is too cold outside to work in the garage, I can whittle inside the house. Jim Quote
jollyred Posted October 14, 2017 Report Posted October 14, 2017 I have done some. It is a great indoor activity, but wood chips can be a problem if you are in a living area. One good way to keep them down is to use a towel in your lap to catch them. Remember to always sharpen your knife before it gets dull. Quote
jbrowning Posted October 14, 2017 Author Report Posted October 14, 2017 Thanks jollyred, what kind of knife do you use? I'm wanting to get a pocket knife to see if I'm really interested in it or if this is another passing hobby. Quote
Scrappile Posted October 14, 2017 Report Posted October 14, 2017 I recently made a new internet friend that is selling a Hawk G-4 like new condition saw. I cannot pay cash for another saw I don't need, but I threw out some trade options.. We, of coarse, got emailing back and forth. and now consider each other as a friend. I backed out on the saw, although I had him, but I really do not need another saw. Anyway, during our back and forth, he told me he is a carver. Fact he shows his carvings at a local carving club show that I attend every year if I can. I would love to be a "carver" but have no talent for it... I am a whittler, sitting around a campfire, making a longer, bigger stick shorter and smaller, but I can not get anything to look like anything.... He directed me to some Youtube videos. A carver named Lynn Doughty, that carves characters, with a utility knife. He makes it all look so simple. No expensive carving knives. I would love to be able to carve and I try often, but it appears to be a talent I do not possess. Quote
jollyred Posted October 15, 2017 Report Posted October 15, 2017 I have a couple of carving knives, but mostly use a 3 blade pocket knife. It has a large clip blade and two smaller blades, a sheepsfoot and a pen knife blade. Mine is fairly large, since it fits my hand well. Just make sure to get one with smooth handles and of a size you can hold comfortably. And keep a stone handy to sharpen with. Back when I started we did not have utube, so I had to use books. The one that gave me the most information was "Whittling and Woodcarving" by E. J. Tangerman. Today, I guess the second best source of information is utube. The best source is still an experienced carver or a carving club. Quote

Jim I think carving takes that special person with an eye to see a picture on the what ever they are carving as they carve. Scrappile 1 Quote
blights69 Posted October 17, 2017 Report Posted October 17, 2017 I have my own shaped knives I use for whittling I have made several canes with them it is nice and relaxing to whittle an hour away now and then Quote
Rockytime Posted October 30, 2017 Report Posted October 30, 2017 I whittle away my time quite often and don't even have to do nuthin'. Quote
jheille Posted October 30, 2017 Report Posted October 30, 2017 I whittle, a little(pun intended) They do make aprons large enough for your lap while whittling in the house. You'll still have chips fly all over, but not as much as there would be without the apron. Quote
Scrappile Posted October 30, 2017 Report Posted October 30, 2017 I did do one thing that was real fun.. I have a Cherry stick I use for a walking stick.. I have had it around 30 years. I have taken it on a lot of camping trips, and I whittle on it around the camp fire. I have a pirate, a rattle snake, a raven, a bear and a porpoise, Whittled on it. I may have to tell people what they are, but I tried.. I have used the same folding buck knife to whittle everything. That stick and the Coke bottle of marbles I have saved from spray paint cans are my Grandkids favorite things Grandpa has. They argue over who gets them when Grandpa dies. Makes me feel do good to know they are waiting for Grandpa to die.... jbrowning and blights69 2 Quote
meflick Posted October 31, 2017 Report Posted October 31, 2017 I decided I needed more than one emoji for @Scrappile's comment about his grandkids. Scrappile 1 Quote

The main thing is Paul you are leaving them a legacy fair enough it is your marbles but at least you now know it is not true you have not lost them you have just bequeathed them to your grandkids Scrappile 1 Quote
