I was having problems cutting patterns. My distance glasses were no help and my bifoculs were just as bad. I had my routine eye exam a few months ago and I explained my problem to the doctor. He asked me some questions concerning working on the scroll saw and said "I might have a solution." He came back with an odd pair of glasses and said try these. We set up a mock pattern (simple pencil sketch) at the distance I normally work at. The lines were clear and sharp. I said "these are great. What are they?" He explained that they were occupational glasses. He prescribed them to people who had jobs that entailed being able to see fine details like electronic assembly, working on circuit boards, etc. If you wear glasses and are having problems cutting patterns keep this in mind the next time you see your eye doctor.

He had reviewed my exams and made adjustments to the lenses (on the occupational glasses) before I tried them (they had different lenses attached). He rattled off some numbers to his assistant and they gave me a seperate prescription for them. They have also improved my ability to see my PC screen. They very well could be some type of magnifiers. I never asked. I have been able to reduce the width of lines on my patterns in Gimp to 0.25 pxl's as opposed to the default 1.0 pxl. I can cut the lines like a surgeon now

I need to check into that. I'm actually supposed to wear glasses. I gave them up long ago though. Everytime they changed my prescription, they did great for a while. Then it would get where things are always either too far away or too close. I'd have to move everything to the correct distance from my face so I could see. Hey! That's what I was doing without the glasses, so why bother with them. Maybe what you're talking about though would help keep me from having to take as many breaks from the saw. I have to stop often and rest my eyes or everything starts to run together as the headache starts to set in for the long haul.

I've gone to the dept stores and gotten glasses off the shelf. I have a pair for computer, a pair for reading and a pair for woodworking. Each is a different focal length or strength. The easy way to do it is measure how far away you are from what you are looking at. Then bring a sample of what you want to see to the store and using different strength glasses approximate the same distance and look for the clearest vision. Works like a champ. Just get the lowest power glasses that will give you clear vision, as that will have the most variance in distances. The higher the power the more you tighter the distance must be. Also use plastic as they can also work well as safety glasses in case something breaks.
