Mimi Posted January 18, 2018 Report Posted January 18, 2018 Ok So I have designed the intersecting word pattern. Not the greatest but I did it. . Now I have two problems . How do I get a border around it and how do I get it from a svg a jpg document.. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
jerry1939 Posted January 18, 2018 Report Posted January 18, 2018 My preferred method is to do the word art off of the canvass. Using the RECTANGULAR tool, make a rectangle on the canvass. Click on it and on top, set the width & height. (I use inches). I usually take a notch out of each corner. Using the CIRCLE tool make a circle. Place the circle on a corner of your rectangle. Size the circle as needed. With the circle SELECTED, use the arrow keys to position it. The selected circle will have 4 arrows. Line up 2 of them with the lines of the rectangle. With the circle selected, go to EDIT - DUPLICATE and keep doing this until you have a circle on each corner. While holding SHIFT, select 1 circle and the rectangle. Go to PATH - DIFFERANCE. That cuts out that quarter circle. Repeat as needed. Click SAVE. Draw an imaginary "box" around your word art, hesitate while everything in your "box" gets selected. Near the top center (of inscape) there is a padlock symbol. BE SURE IT IS LOCKED. Resize as needed and slowly drag it into the rectangle. When you are satisfied with the size of the wording, go to ALIGN & DISTRIBUTE. (Shift+ Cntrl+A). Hold SHIFT, select both the rectangle & the word and align both horizontal & vertical. ANYTIME YOU MESS SOMETHING, GO TO YOUR FRIEND, EDIT - UNDO LAST. Repeat as needed. With your BORDER selected, EDIT - DUPLICATE. You won't see anything happen, but you now have 2 copies. For the base, pull the copy down and set the desired dimensions. Click FILE - SAVE AS. Click on whatever format you desire. Sorry to make you spend so much reading. Hope this helps Friend. jerry OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Mimi Posted January 19, 2018 Author Report Posted January 19, 2018 Thank you Jerry. It makes a lot of sense. You wrote it out step by step. . I will try and do it this weekend. I am not a pattern person that is why I asked for some one to make it. I would much rather be cutting than sitting at my computer. I get very frustrated and have to leave it for a few days and it is putting me behind in my projects . Thanks again for the info. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
WayneMahler Posted January 22, 2018 Report Posted January 22, 2018 Mimi Inkscape won't save a jpg file. You can save as a png file that will open with most picture viewing software. To convert to a jpg you need different software. I run both Inkscape and Corel Draw and png will pass through both no issue. For the frame or rectangle just draw it on the screen and select the fill and border you want. I normally have fill set to none, border to black at 1 point. I can understand your frustration sitting at a computer, designing things. I do it on average 4 - 5 hours a day and another 8 or so cutting or making furniture. OCtoolguy 1 Quote

Open the svg with another programme like gimp then export back as a jpg, inkscape will not save as a jpeg, you could also just save the svg to your desktop then open with paint and then save as and pick jpeg . Greenie Posted January 24, 2018 Report Posted January 24, 2018 One more thing Jerry, I can draw the bridges but how do I delete the space to make the bridge OCtoolguy 1 Quote
jerry1939 Posted January 24, 2018 Report Posted January 24, 2018 (edited) Here is how I do bridges. Use the Bezier tool to draw the part you want to remove. If needed, SELECT PATH BY NODES (The 2nd tool down, on the left. Bend a line as needed. This is especially nice for the letter "R", on the right side of the bridge. SELECT the Bezier shape (bridge", hold SHIFT on the keyboard and also select the letter. PATH - DIFFERENCE. IF I am satisfied with the looks, I go to EDIT- UNDO LAST. That puts the "bridge" back in. SELECT the Bezier shape, EDIT - DUPLICATE and shove a copy of the shape down. You might want to use it again. If it don't fit the way you want the next time you use the same letter, apply the nodes again and move whatever you desire. You have 2 friends in inkscape. 1. Keep hitting SAVE ever time you have succeeded in completing a small task. 2. EDIT - UNDO LAST. You can keep repeating as often as needed to get back to what you were satisfied with. OR go to FILE - CLOSE. Go to FILE - OPEN RECENT and it will open your last SAVE. Edited January 24, 2018 by jerry1939 Changed a word. OCtoolguy 1 Quote

Mimi Posted January 24, 2018 Author Report Posted January 24, 2018 Thank you Jerry it is great. I think if I mess with it enough I will get the hang of it. I just have to learn to walk away when I get frustrated. and give my self plenty of time to get it done. OCtoolguy and meflick 2 Quote

Like anything, it takes some time to learn and we all need to learn to walk away when we get frustrated or are tired and give us plenty of time to get it done. Yours looks good and soon you will be able to know you can do these with no issues and will be twice as proud of them when you know that YOU created the pattern and did the cutting. Also remember, once you have a border or two that you like to use, they should be fairly simple to add onto any design you have and increase or decrease the size as needed to fit. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Mimi Posted January 25, 2018 Author Report Posted January 25, 2018 Thank you everyone for all the help. I am not the most patient person and when things seem simple and I can't get It right away I get mad so I think pattern making is helping me with that. And so do your words of encouragement help. Once I get this under control I might move on to different types of patterns. . I can make simple ones. It's the pictures that I want to lean how next. But right now it will be word signs. Thanks again WayneMahler 1 Quote
