oldhudson Posted May 2, 2018 Report Posted May 2, 2018 Back in December, at the start of winter my garage door spring snapped (a torsion spring). I hired a outfit to replace it and they did a fine job. It works all the time. I asked how I should lubricate the spring and he said, "don't put anything on it". That makes no sense to me. I used to drizzle 30 wt. oil, but I thought I'd ask this august group what's correct. And while were here what about the guide wheels that follow the tracks? Thanks. Quote
savethebeer Posted May 2, 2018 Report Posted May 2, 2018 There are so many materials used to make things nowadays and that is where the problem is. Some things require oil, others require graphite or similar and oil might actually damage the mechanism or the bearing. Next time you are in one of the big stores have a read of the labels on all the selection of lubrication sprays on sale just to give yourself an idea of the range of lubricants there are. I do know there are things out there which are built to last a lifetime without needing lubrication, so you need to know the materials used in your door mechanism before buying any lubricant. Dan Posted May 2, 2018 Report Posted May 2, 2018 I'm pretty sure the garage door repairman is correct. Oil or grease on the spring won't make it last longer and as Bob said, it could cause problems down the road. oldhudson 1 Quote
new2woodwrk Posted May 2, 2018 Report Posted May 2, 2018 (edited) I just had this repair done on my garage - they told me to use Garage Blaster once every 6 months or so on the wheels - works great and keeps my door quiet! Got mine from Lowes https://www.amazon.com/Blaster-Chemical-Company-Garage-Lubricants/dp/B0002JM8G8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1525298812&sr=8-1&keywords=blaster+garage+door The torsion spring should get a spray if it needs it Edited May 2, 2018 by new2woodwrk Quote
