Back in December, at the start of winter my garage door spring snapped (a torsion spring). I hired a outfit to replace it and they did a fine job. It works all the time. I asked how I should lubricate the spring and he said, "don't put anything on it". That makes no sense to me. I used to drizzle 30 wt. oil, but I thought I'd ask this august group what's correct. And while were here what about the guide wheels that follow the tracks?

Thanks.

There are so many materials used to make things nowadays and that is where the problem is. Some things require oil, others require graphite or similar and oil might actually damage the mechanism or the bearing. Next time you are in one of the big stores have a read of the labels on all the selection of lubrication sprays on sale just to give yourself an idea of the range of lubricants there are. I do know there are things out there which are built to last a lifetime without needing lubrication, so you need to know the materials used in your door mechanism before buying any lubricant.

I just had this repair done on my garage - they told me to use Garage Blaster once every 6 months or so on the wheels - works great and keeps my door quiet!

Got mine from Lowes

The torsion spring should get a spray if it needs it
