savethebeer Posted May 20, 2018 Report Posted May 20, 2018 Some of you may remember my previous attempts at getting a pattern done in previous episodes called GIMP Again and Face Required. Well After long and thoughtful consideration I decided that Carmel was never going to like anything I produced from that photo so I went looking at Facebook and came up with the following photo of them. I spent about 4 hours getting to the pattern stage and I'm really happy with Carmel's face and less so with Peter's face but what can you do. The woes started this morning when I turned on the computer with the intention of printing off the pattern. My computer went into an automatic update process on startup to which I had no way of stopping or postponing. When the computer opened up I found GIMP had been badly affected for some reason. My file of this pattern was gone, the saved name was blank. What I found was an 'Unnamed File' with the curves, photocopy, and pattern layer still there. every other layer from this file was gone including the original photo. The one above is something I resurrected from another file and is the 'black and white photo' layer from a previous attempt. I also discovered that the Brushes tool box no longer contains the button to resize the brushes. I will run with the pattern as it is, all I had left was Peter's teeth but I can draw them in pencil before I start. I am going to have to fully reinstall GIMP before I do anymore patterns and I will make sure I save important files on a stick in future. Bob Quote
jollyred Posted May 21, 2018 Report Posted May 21, 2018 I remember a cartoon I had in my office from the comic strip"Fish". The main character was at his computer with the "computer wizard" standing beside him. M.C. says "I have everything just the way I want it and everything is working great." C.W. says "Must be time for an update". Been there, done that. RabidAlien 1 Quote

savethebeer Posted May 21, 2018 Author Report Posted May 21, 2018 Chris, I like the result you got out of Paint. My operating system updates itself every 7 days and has never affected any program before, so all I can say is the damage was done during the updating, probably not by the updating. On the plus side I now have a very snazzy looking Gimp 2.10 in a charcoal gray colour. ( I shall write to you all in about 2 weeks asking how I can turn off the gray colour .....................} Bob 3Dface 1 Quote

savethebeer Posted May 25, 2018 Author Report Posted May 25, 2018 I've hit that wall again. This time its mouths. Below is the pattern and its 95% cut. But my problem is the way both mouths have turned out. I shall finish the pattern and then file it under firewood, and then start again. Could someone have a look at the photo above and just concentrate on both mouths and give me some hints about getting a better finish for both mouths. Carmel's is gone completely. I could come up with no way of having both lips and a closed mouth. Peter's mouth has similar issues, how do I put in both lips and all his teeth without having an island. I was going to add in his teeth, and more of Carmels hair and eyelashes by carving with a Dremel which might have the visual effect without reducing the strength of the various parts. (this bit was going to an experiment) Quote

(this bit was going to an experiment) i cheat... i have made patterns that i could not the the eyes and mouth in the same pattern so i save both pics. i open each pattern in paint then i cut the good mouth from one pattern and paste it on the pattern with the good eyes. hope that helps. savethebeer Posted May 26, 2018 Author Report Posted May 26, 2018 Thanks Chris for that tip. I'm not adverse to cheating as such, the issue here is a lack of available good photos of them. My main issue is actually making the connection between the way the mouths look on the pattern (any pattern) and the finished cut on the wood. In this case, as I cut the pattern I was beginning to realise there was no way I could do the cut of Carmel's mouth without removing it completely from the wood. The same with Peters mouth. How to cut lips and not have the teeth fall out. I have removed the pattern from the wood and I think I could get away with Peter's mouth as it is but not Carmel's, so I'll go through other portraits and see what suggestion I can get. Bob Quote
