I usually go into the gallery on my phone, select three or four photos, and then "share" them via email to myself.  Then hop on my computer, and retrieve them from my inbox.  What make/model phone and computer/operating system are you using?  Most computes *should* automatically detect the phone when its plugged in, but I've seen times where I had to go download and install the software for the phone, or put the device into "transfer" mode.  Emailing to yourself is usually the easiest for a small handful of photos, in my experience.

Kevin,

I went from one Android phone to another two weeks ago with an upgraded phone and changing the sim card into the new phone, and my daughter gave me the following advice. Sign into Google and save all contacts, photos etc into Google. Then the photos etc stay with you off in the cloud.  When I set my new phone up, it suddenly became populated with all my phone contacts, but only some of my photos.  More photos appeared in my new phone over the next few days but most suprising was all my saved bookmarks from my laptop appeared in my phone. I know the rest of my photos are up in the cloud so I'm happy enough with the situation.

The above tip only works if you save things before hand. You may be able to save some items if the sim card was undamaged and you had saved stuff to the sim card but you may have to go to a phone shop to get things saved from the phones internal memory if the phone was really badly damaged.

I'm one of those who has kids that can help but let me try. I have an Android phone and a Google account and every time I take a pic somehow? it's saved in Google Photos. So if your old & new phones are Android, and you have a Google account - there has to be a way to sync them. Good luck Kevin, not much in life can be more frustrating than trying to understand technology. Especially when the kids, not in high school yet, seem to manage it in their sleep.

Anybody else curious as to how one "accidentally" destroys a phone with a propane torch?  There's gotta be a story here.

Not sure who you carrier is. AT&T just did an update and have the same issue. Plan on calling them when I get a chance, in about a week .

Metro psc, I think it was the data cable broke at the same time.

Interesting, Thanks! Seems like I waited too long to go into my accounts and lost lots of pictures.

Too bad this post wasn't seen earlier. I can't even remember what I had for breakfast.
