Those are a dangerous machine if not handle properly.  Back in my turning days one of the lady members of a forum I belonged to was killed while turning on a lathe.  Piece flew off and embedded in her head.

Stupid # 1 -- Using spindle point headstock and tailstock to hold that large diameter, which was probably out of round to begin with. That size piece should have been mounted to a face plate.

Stupid #2 -- No protection! When turning, specially when turning raw/green, out of round, stock, a full face mask is mandatory. Even when turning pens, safety goggles/glasses are a must. A padded turning smock is a good idea, also. Considering the dust from turning dry wood or the mist from green wood, a dust mask is a requirement

Lathes are like any other power tool. Dangerous to the people who don't use them correctly or are "So Experienced" that they don't need to follow the safety rules. I've seen a few experience turners who decide to forgo the safety equipment and get soundly banged, just like that guy did. I keep my face mask hanging right over the power switch, as a reminder.

I am with Les. I tried bowls but at the class I took with the pro the pen went well the bowl shot across the room even with supervision. Bowls have not been tried again since then

The lathe is as safe as most tools in the workshop if things are done properly.  Do not let someone not doing it properly scare you off.  It is a great tool and lots of fun, but like any tool you need to learn and use proper procedures.   I turned over one hundred pens, with out any injury, I had so blanks explode, things can go wrong but with proper procedure and following good safety  practices... it is a great machine.  The only thing I have against it, every thing made on it is "round"!

Your last sentence:  When Serving My Country, I spent a year on the west coast of Greenland.  Decades ago the comic strip Hagar The Horrible had the line - "If they can put a man on Greenland, you would think ________________" .

Don't know why they couldn't invent a lathe to create square shapes.  🤔  It would probably take someone who is "Totally Looney".  (Your words, not mine).
