penquin Posted December 29, 2018 Report Posted December 29, 2018 Don't know about anyone else but I would ask the store manager if I could do a tracing of it before they take it down. Get some large paper and go for it. They just might allow you to do that when they take it down. Most stores will work with folks I have been lucky that way before. Can't hear to ask. jim Quote

Got the back printed, taped together and transferred to 1/4” Birch plywood. Stacked two layers of plywood and cut it out. Still need the interior penetrations cut out and a little bit of cleanup on the edges. Then cut out the scenic area on one layer only for the back. Looking good so far, Thanks, Ralph AHHHHHHH!! I didn't put the stars in!! Duh, Should i make another sheet with the stars? Drat!!! Sorry about that. Nobody else noticed either... where's my editors!?? This just looks great so far, I'm impressed, and very glad to see that everything is working so far. Nice job!! I have fresh inspiration. Russell RDVawter, WayneMahler and meflick 3 Quote
Scrappile Posted December 29, 2018 Report Posted December 29, 2018 Had to go back and look for "stars". They must not be real important to the overall piece if no one noticed.... Birchbark 1 Quote

I thought maybe I would paint them on at the time, there is some painting anyway on the village. Looking back now at the original pictures I think they would look better cut. I also think it would look better with the stars than without, so I will plan on adding them. Thanks, Ralph Scrappile 1 Quote

Birchbark Posted December 30, 2018 Report Posted December 30, 2018 Here are the trees that go on the top shelf. Not the exact ones, but what i could make. Maybe they can be tweaked a little if need be. Russell Scrappile, don watson, ChelCass and 1 other 2 2 Quote
Birchbark Posted December 31, 2018 Report Posted December 31, 2018 I started working on one of the buildings, church maybe?. The steeple/tower is small. Very small. Does that seem right? The material for the buildings and trees etc, looks to be 1/8", if that is the case, then the tower/steeple, would only be 3/4" wide, leaving only 1/2" to place the windows and things. Did the steeple seem to be only 3/4" x 3/4"? Russell multitom 1 Quote
worbler Posted December 31, 2018 Report Posted December 31, 2018 Wow Russell, you're going all out with this project. Birchbark 1 Quote
RDVawter Posted December 31, 2018 Author Report Posted December 31, 2018 We actually went back into this store yesterday to have another look at this, and it had been sold. So no help there. Looking at the pictures, that steeple can only be 3/4” wide, if you compare it with the shelf standards in the one picture, they look roughly the same. I think you have it right. This project is a lot of work, but it is going to look amazing when it is finished. Thanks, Ralph Quote
Scrappile Posted December 31, 2018 Report Posted December 31, 2018 I received the "Scroller" catalog yesterday and saw this lighted project in it. Might be it could be reduced in size to fit the belly of the beast, so to speak. http://www.scrolleronline.com/product/Lighted-Holiday-Village-Silhouette-Design-Pattern/324 RDVawter, WayneMahler and Birchbark 3 Quote
Birchbark Posted January 5, 2019 Report Posted January 5, 2019 (edited) Okay, here's the church from the top shelf, sorry it took so long, it's very time consuming trying to figure out all the sizes and dimensions etc., then to draw them out. But I am still working on this as time allows. I'm not going to draw out all that needs painted. It is to much, trying to figure out placement, size, proportion etc, you'll need to do that after it is assembled and put things where you want them and what size you want them. This was cut with a CNC Laser I'm sure, it is quite a challenge to cut on a scroll saw. If at any point you decide to give up, make sure you tell me, so I can stop work on the pattern. Scrappile Posted January 5, 2019 Report Posted January 5, 2019 Birchbark, this is probably more work for you than it will be to build. I hope you know it is greatly appreciated. RDVawter and Birchbark 1 1 Quote

Russell Don’t be sorry Russell, I consider myself very lucky to have you spending this kind of time on a pattern for someone you don’t even know. My cold is getting better and I will probably get back to working on this within a few days. Thanks, Ralph WayneMahler and Birchbark 2 Quote
MrsN Posted January 7, 2019 Report Posted January 7, 2019 This is going to be an awesome pattern when full done. I really like it and may make one myself Birchbark 1 Quote
RDVawter Posted January 18, 2019 Author Report Posted January 18, 2019 I finally got back to working on this. I have the deer cut and put together. It is not glued yet, but it is all fitted and ready for gluing. multitom, Falcon, meflick and 5 others 8 Quote
Scrappile Posted January 18, 2019 Report Posted January 18, 2019 (edited) Oh my gosh!! That is awesome. You are doing a great job. I wonder how sturdy it is when not glued. My thought being it would be nice to be able to take it apart for storing in the off season.... or no? Edited January 18, 2019 by Scrappile Quote
spirithorse Posted January 18, 2019 Report Posted January 18, 2019 Birchbark and Ralph/RDVawter, Thank you both so very much for all the work that is going into this and for the pics of the on-going project progress. Great work! Thanks and God Bless! Spirithorse Birchbark 1 Quote
Birchbark Posted January 18, 2019 Report Posted January 18, 2019 WOW! WOW! ha, it seems to be working! I don't want to say that I'm surprised, but wow. haha. The only question i have Ralph, is about the one back leg brace. Did it not fit correctly? Does it need some adjustment? I was worried about the "box" portions all fitting tightly, you seem to have made the adjustments to make it nice and light tight. Was there much adjusting needed? What skill level would you say this project would need to be classified as? You did an outstanding job so far! Thank you for keeping us updated, I guess I'd better get back to work on the rest of it! Thanks again for the update, it's looking great. Russell multitom 1 Quote

Thanks again for the update, it's looking great. Russell Russell, It has gone fairly well. I made all the box pieces from the placement slots on the front reindeer, and then trimmed them or filed the slots to make it fit, back and front. The only piece I recut was the brace between the antlers. The slots just didn’t match. I took these from the pattern (the only one I took straight from the pattern). If I had measured from the antlers it would have been fine. The antlers printed out on one piece of paper fine but they are slightly under scale. Like maybe 95%? If I do another, I will try to get to 100%. The braces, I took from the pattern and stack cut all three. The only problem with the missing one is when I took them apart, a piece of the one tore out at the lamination of the plywood. I glued the piece back in. It just needs to set up and be sanded, then installed. I used a good grade of 1/4” birch plywood on this. If I do another I will make sure I get Baltic Birch. It is way stronger and does not have the delamination problem. It is also a full 1/4”, whereas this stuff is only 3/16”. I didn’t have enough scraps of Baltic Birch around for a project this big, and I can’t get it locally. I can get it about 1 1/2 hours away from home. I would say this project is intermediate to difficult. Mostly because of the care required in fitting and construction, rather than in the actual cutting. i haven’t done any scroll work for probably 20 years, but now that I’m retired I’m getting back into it. This is my first big project since starting up again. i will continue to post my progress on the rest of it. Thanks, Ralph Ivan Nikolaev, ChelCass and Birchbark 2 1 Quote

Scrappile Posted January 18, 2019 Report Posted January 18, 2019 (edited) I came across a Steve Good pattern for a little bird house. Here is a picture. I thought the front panel could easily be changed a little to make a little house for the scene. I went to Steve Good's catalog and searched "birdhouse" Edited January 18, 2019 by Scrappile Quote

But it could be adapted. Russel already made some buildings. I will go ahead with those and see how things work out. Ralph Birchbark, Scrappile and WayneMahler 3 Quote
