Scrappile Posted January 1, 2019 Report Posted January 1, 2019 Without trying to start a debate, I have a question about bought patterns. I have stated on here a few times, I have more patterns collected than I have time left to do. Some I look at now and wonder why I wanted to do them and some I just know I will not get to. These are ones I paid for, but have not used. Can I gift them to other scrollers? Personally I think I can without breaking any law. Some are hard copy, some are files. What say you all? I will probably do it, heck at my age life in prison is not much of a determent anyway (I saw that in a reason joke somewhere, but it has merit)........ Especially if the prison has a good wood shop.... Quote
spirithorse Posted January 1, 2019 Report Posted January 1, 2019 Hi, Paul, Here are a couple paragraphs that I found concerning copyrights. There is a disclaimer that these researchers have no legal qualifications. Quoted material from www.craftsandcopyrights.com How can I legally share a craft pattern with a friend? You can lend the original pattern/artwork, as long as you do not keep a copy of it, even a working copy, at the same time. If the origninal number of products stay in circulation, then it is ok. Can I sell a pattern I've purchased? In most cases, you can sell the pattern/artwork you purchased. You may not sell a copy of that pattern/artwork. Think of it as selling a used book. Exceptions may be if there is a licensing contract which is made clear before purchase that limits this action. This happens more often in software or digital pattern licenses, so read the agreements before purchasing. God Bless! Spirithorse Scrappile 1 Quote
Scrappile Posted January 2, 2019 Author Report Posted January 2, 2019 I read that as I can as long as I have not retained a copy for my use or already used them... I could eve sell them. Quote
meflick Posted January 2, 2019 Report Posted January 2, 2019 That was my general answer Paul, if you bought the pattern and have never used it and do not retain a copy of it for yourself, then you could sell the pattern or give it away but only the original pattern, you could also not make multiple copies of the pattern to sell or give away. As noted, you would want to verify if there were any terms limiting your ability to do so from the place you purchased the pattern from. Generally, I would think there would not be. Quote
don watson Posted January 2, 2019 Report Posted January 2, 2019 I am in the same situation. So much to do, so little time. I have a lot of free patterns and some bought patterns, I also have books with patterns. I would like to give my unused patterns away but I would also like to give away patterns that I have used. I will be watching this thread with interest. Don W Quote
